[Image Description: A leaning, low wooden fence along a paved path overlooks Morro Strand State Beach, with bright green plants growing along its base. Past the fence, dunes dotted with deeper green growth give way to an expanse of tan sandy beach with blue and white Pacific Ocean waves washing its edges and reflecting the late afternoon sunlight. In the background a silhouetted Morro Rock stands out from the hills of Montana de Oro state park in the distance. An azure sky with a few fluffy white clouds form the horizon.
A white text box is screened over the upper part of the sky. At the top of the text box the AFA logo with the words Access for All in blue rests above large text that says "VIRTUAL MIXER" with the text "TRAVEL AND TOURISM: Successes and Challenges" followed by "Tuesday, June 18, 5:00 PM" in smaller font below. Check out a favorite mock/cocktail recipe below:

Doctor’s Orders
5 oz lemon-lime soda
3 oz pineapple juice
1 tsp grenadine
Maraschino cherries for garnish
Fresh pineapple slice for garnish
Fill a tall glass with ice, add all the ingredients and stir. Garnish with maraschino cherries and a slice of fresh pineapple and serve.

Boozy Version: Add 2 oz of blueberry vodka or rum of choice. For those with pineapple sensitivities, blueberry garnish and a splash of orange juice are yummy substitutions!

Hope to see you there!

July is Disability Pride Month! SLO Access for All will be sharing posts throughout the month to celebrate disability as diversity, and allyship tips for supporting a more inclusive community. We invite you to join us by sharing your perspectives, experiences and support by including with your posts.

If you're new to Disability Pride Month, we'll be sharing info about that, too. Here's a good primer piece from Forbes:

"Advocate alongside the Disabled Community: Realize that advocacy is not a spectator sport, and the fight for disability rights cannot be shouldered by the Disabled community alone. Allies are crucial in this fight. Use your platforms to call out discrimination when you see it, to push for laws and policies that protect disability rights, and to ensure that the voices of Disabled people are heard in the spaces where decisions are made. It's not about speaking for Disabled people, but about using your voice to amplify theirs. The most powerful changes happen when we all stand together, advocating for a world that is fair, inclusive, and accessible to all."

It was the revelation that, while I was privileged to have been oblivious to these challenges in the past, I should have been aware and proactive much earlier.

Tomorrow, May 18, is Global Accessibility Awareness Day and SLO Access for All has a few quick tips for your social media posts going forward to boost digital access and inclusion:

1. Choose Images Accessibly – Avoid images that contain a lot of text. Include essential info in the text portion of your post, or—if it must be part of an image—make sure to use comprehensive image descriptions.
2. Always Include Image Descriptions – In the text portion of your post use words to describe the content of any image or visual content. Use plain language to describe what and/or who is shown and provide context for the significance of the image.
3. – Use Pascal Case ( ) or Camel Case ( ) where the first letter of individual words within your hashtags are capitalized. This allows assistive technology to recognize and read the hashtag as intended, and can prevent confusion if your words could be read wrong ( could mean or ).

This GAAD, AFA is asking you to make a pledge to improve . Share this post to help spread the word!

Access for All

Mission

The mission of “Access for All” is to assist in creating an accessible community where people with disabilities have an equal opportunity to fully participate in all aspects of SLO County life. We promote advocacy within the community through keeping people informed, providing a connection between diverse community agencies and publicly acknowledging outstanding advocacy work through the Paul Wolf Accessibility Advocacy Award (PWAAA).

Vision

Our vision is a community in which a disability is neutral; a community where services are integrated such that only unique and uncommon accommodations are not readily available. We envision a community in which the opportunities for citizens with disability are comparable to the opportunities for the general population.
