English really makes sense when you know the history!

Octopus, octet, and octagon all start with and have a meaning of 8, right? So what's up with OCTober being the 10th month of our calendar?

The calendar we use today evolved over the centuries of people keeping track of days, weeks, months, and years. The ancient Roman calendar only had 10 months that began with its first month being called March. In that calendar, October was the 8th month, November was the 9th month, and December was the 10th month. If you look those up in Etymonline.com, you'll see those line up for spelling and meaning connections.

But in 45 BCE, the "Julian calendar" was introduced during Julius Caesar's reign. This calendar added two new months, January and February before March, which resulted in the month names not lining up anymore with their numerical meanings.
