How easy is it to support your community?

I know many people want to do more to support their neighbors in need, but feel like they don’t have the time or energy to volunteer or do a fundraiser. 5K race? My knees say no!

But it doesn’t have to be complicated. I approached the manager of my local fitness center about doing a food drive for the Hays County Food Bank and they enthusiastically agreed. Their marketing department even handled creating the signs. All I had to do was ask.

Big Thanks to the San Marcos Crunch Fitness Club for helping to give back to our community!

I’m excited to share that I’ve joined the Hays County Food Bank Board of Directors! 🥦

When I started the food pantry in our pediatric office, I saw first hand just how many families are trying their hardest but still struggling to afford groceries (a problem that's getting worse, as we all know). What I love most is that the food pantry helps families right away — rather than only giving information about local food resources, we can send them home with a bag of food directly from the office. No extra trip or transportation needed.
It’s been a rewarding experience, and I’m really honored to continue that work as part of the Food Bank’s mission to support families in Hays County.

I encourage all my friends to consider donating food, money, or time to their local food bank if able.

Hey y'all! I'm speaking at the **San Marcos Rotary Club** this Wednesday, November 5 on one of my favorite topics — how the food we eat shapes both how long we live and how well we live.

My talk is called “Protect Your Healthspan: How Food Choices Shape Your Future Health."

I’ll be sharing how common chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and fatty liver are more connected than we think — and how simple, realistic changes in what we add to our plates can make a big difference.

It’s never too late to start. 🌿
Small changes add up. 🫘
And it’s not about restriction — it’s about nourishing yourself for the long run. 🥗

If you’re in the San Marcos area, I’d love to see you there!
And if not, you can always catch these kinds of conversations on my podcast - https://www.eatgreenswithdrblack.com

🎀 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and I’m wrapping up Season 2 of Eat Your Greens with an episode full of hope and practical advice.

I talk about the foods most linked to lowering breast cancer risk, the habits that make the biggest difference, and why small changes can add up to big health benefits. I even share a bright, colorful beet salad recipe that’s packed with antioxidants and flavor.

If you’ve been wondering what you can actually do to reduce your risk or support someone you love, this episode is for you.

⚠️ Food allergies, food intolerances, food sensitivities… what’s the difference?

Parents ask me about this all the time in clinic—and the worry is real. Is it dangerous? Is it something they’ll outgrow? Do you really need to cut out that food forever?

In this replay of one of the most downloaded episodes of Eat Your Greens, I break down:
👉 The difference between allergies, intolerances & sensitivities
👉 What symptoms to watch for (and when to call the doctor)
👉 Why “food sensitivity” tests can actually make things worse
👉 A powerful story from a mom whose baby had a rare, severe reaction to oatmeal

💬 Have you ever had to navigate food allergies in your family? Drop a comment below—I’d love to hear your experience.

Working on my meal-prep strategy - "keep it simple".

Sheet pan baked tofu and roasted veg with farro, air-fryer roasted chickpeas & "Green hummus" made in the food processor with frozen peas, tahini, and herbs to top whole wheat toast for breakfast, and steam-in-the-bag sweet potatoes. Not shown is the pitcher of smoothies I made this morning and the bagged salad blend.

Thank you HEB for carrying super-firm tofu that requires no pressing at all! Game changer!

5 days worth of healthy high-protein meals with minimal prep and clean up. 🥦

I had the chance to talk with Chef Leah Sarris, a chef, registered dietitian, and educator who helped shape the field of culinary medicine. She helped launch the first-ever teaching kitchen in a U.S. medical school—and her work is now used by programs across the country.

In our conversation, we talk about:
🍎 The power of hands-on food education
👩‍🍳 Why teaching people how to cook matters
📦 Helping families make the most of food bank ingredients
💡 What’s next for food as medicine in healthcare

This episode is full of insight, heart, and practical ideas. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed trying to cook healthier meals or wondered what culinary medicine is all about—this one’s for you.

https://healthylooksgreatonyou.com/everything-youre.../

I've been tracking my sleep lately and I think my Apple watch has basically given up on me as a lost cause. Seriously, I would get at least 2 more hours of sleep a night if I could just turn off the mental dialogue. Why does my mind think it can solve all the problems in my life between the hours of 10 pm and midnight?!

Miraculously, I got an email from a friend and fellow Lifestyle Medicine physician about her new Masterclass on sleep. I will definitely joining in on a session. Why don't you join me and we can all get better sleep!!

Trying harder to sleep, makes sleeping harder.
