Today, the Hays County Health Department recognizes World Autism Awareness Day!

Autism is a form of neurodivergence, meaning there are many different ways of thinking, communicating, and experiencing the world. There is no single way to be autistic. Each person has their own strengths, interests, and ways of engaging with others. Many autistic people describe deep focus, strong interests, and meaningful connections to the things they care about. These experiences can shape how joy, creativity, and connection show up in everyday life.

This piece was submitted by a community member here in Hays County, reflecting on relationships, learning, and what it means to build a more inclusive and compassionate community.

This post kicks off our Autism Awareness Month series as we celebrate autism acceptance and neurodivergent brilliance. It is also part of our Autism Acceptance Month Zine Project, where we are sharing lived experiences and reflections from autistic and neurodivergent community members and those in relationship with them.
