Beacon House The Beacon House Association of San Pedro is a long-term substance abuse recovery center You can learn more at www.thebeaconhouse.org.

The Beacon House Association of San Pedro is a state-certified, residential substance abuse recovery program for men with a sincere desire to achieve long-lasting abstinence from drugs and alcohol. As residents of the Beacon House, the men are provided with food, shelter, counseling, peer group support, educational opportunities and career training through social enterprise programs, including a Thrift Shop. This allows the men to develop the life, career and social skills they need to build a foundation in recovery, while preparing them for a strong reintegration into the job market and a bright future when they return to their family, home and community. Recently named one of the best addiction treatment centers in the United States by Newsweek Magazine, men from 39 states across the country have received treatment at Beacon House. The organization has grown over the past 50 years to encompass a full city block in San Pedro, California, adjacent to the Port of Los Angeles, including six residential facilities with the capacity to house 110 residents, as well as a kitchen/dining facility. With the support of our donors and the local community, we have helped thousands of men get a second chance at life and regain their place as responsible, productive members of society.

Our sober living residents and their families came together this week at the Bartlett Center for our annual Turkey Pull, a tradition that gives our residents a chance to be of service with the people who matter most to them. Together, they shredded 60 turkeys that will become Thanksgiving dinner for our entire program as well as for hundreds of people experiencing homelessness throughout the South Bay.

As our men have been working on their recovery, they have inevitably missed some holidays with their families, so it was a huge blessing to be able to spend some quality time with them working towards a goal that will bring warmth and comfort to so many people this holiday.

This was Leo and his family's first Turkey Pull (pictured in last photo). He said that they had a wonderful time and that it especially touched his mom. "She's always loved me, but to see me excited about doing something for the homeless was big for her. I think it reassured her that I'm on the right path in life."

Each year, Beacon House hosts a community toy drive to help bring joy to children who may not have much waiting for them under the tree. We know how expensive things are today and that families everywhere are struggling. That’s why this tradition matters now more than ever.

So, we’re calling on community partners and local businesses to help us out. If you are willing to host one of our toy collection boxes, we’d be honored to work together. We will deliver boxes by December 1, 2025, and will pick them up by December 19, 2025.

Your support will help us give children in our communities a brighter Christmas.

Jonny is grateful that recovery has given him the chance to experience emotions again. For years, fear dictated his every move. He buried emotions he couldn’t face and turned to drugs and alcohol to dull the pain. What he didn’t realize then was that by numbing the pain he was also numbing the good feelings as well.

In recovery, Jonny still experiences stress, fear, and doubt. But he also gets to experience joy, freedom, and peace. His faith reminds him that things unfold as they should, which keeps him grounded. And when he feels that fear creep back in, he knows he has friends who he can rely on to support him.

We proudly celebrate Archie Hoggan, Beacon House Executive Director, who has been honored with the 2025 Substance Use Disorder ("SUD") Champions for Change Leadership Award by the Substance Abuse Prevention and Control Bureau of the LA County Department of Public Health. This award recognizes outstanding non-profit leaders who drive change, share expertise, and demonstrate excellent stewardship of their teams and resources.

When Archie stepped into his role in 2021, Beacon House was facing a grim financial outlook amid the lingering challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. His leadership not only stabilized the organization but also successfully steered it into a new direction of growth and community impact. Ultimately, this has allowed Beacon House to improve its quality of care and help more men suffering with the disease of addiction.

This new direction, which included opening two thrift stores and a full-fledged commercial kitchen and catering business, was made possible by two factors: Archie’s reliance on wise counsel and the passion and dedication of his team. These new ventures diversify revenue and help eliminate the fear of funding instability, which allows us to better focus on our core mission of saving lives, reuniting families, and giving men purpose.

Alcoholism is a self-centered disease. It replaces the typical love a father has for his child with a relentless obsession to continue drinking.

Wayne knows this struggle all too well. He knows how it feels to make promises and break them. While he can’t rewrite the past, recovery is teaching him that he can take responsibility, make amends, and rebuild trust through consistency. For him, that starts with putting his son's needs ahead of his own.

Today, Wayne is learning how to be a father who no longer has to break promises. With every phone call and visit, he’s building a stronger relationship with the son he loves so much.

At Beacon House, we know that recovery flourishes in a community built on service and our recent reverse bistro embodied that spirit beautifully. Chef Brandon crafted an incredible menu, and Beacon House staff took on every role for the evening: cooking, serving, bussing tables, and even doing the dishes afterward. With each new platter delivered to the tables, the residents' faces lit up with excitement, and the message was clear that we are all simply walking this path of recovery together.

A real highlight of the evening was a Q&A with the Beacon House leadership team, where residents were encouraged to ask them anything. Some questions led to hilarious stories that had everyone laughing, while more heartfelt questions opened the door to honest reflections about spirituality and hope.

Dustin, a senior sober living resident, shared, “The last reverse bistro was in 2021, so it was really cool to know that we were all experiencing this together for the first time.” Everyone left the bistro knowing that they were a part of the Beacon House Family.

When Greg arrived at Beacon House, he was tired of barreling through life with no direction. His alcoholism had stolen his sense of purpose. Each day was simply something to endure. Through his time in treatment, Greg learned to put others before himself and discovered the importance of service, accountability, and honesty. That shift in his thinking became the foundation for the new life he was building.

Today, Greg is active in his local church, where he has recommitted his life to serving God. He finds great pleasure in being involved in the AA community, where he can share his experience with newcomers and help mentor them on their journey. He works in the Port of Los Angeles as a longshoreman top handler, an occupation that has a high level of responsibility. Through spiritual growth and action, Greg has found what he was missing for so long: a sense of belonging and a meaningful place in life again.

Recently, our residents spent the afternoon carving pumpkins, an activity that was brand-new for some of our men. For those who grew up without moments like these, getting the chance to have fun and create something personal was a blast.

In recovery, experiences like this are important because they build connection. They remind our men that joy can be found in the smallest moments, surrounded by friends.

The best part? When our sober living residents brought out toasted pumpkin seeds so the men could enjoy a warm, crunchy snack when they were done.

Having a criminal record makes life much more difficult. It can lead to encountering significant barriers finding work, being able to get housing, and being eligible to receive financial aid to further your education. Many people who have served their time still feel haunted by their record years later, and unfortunately, many aren't well informed of their options and don't know what resources are available to them.

Last month, Beacon House had the privilege of hosting a free expungement clinic in partnership with Councilmember Tim McOsker, TimeDone, and several other community partners.

The event provided Live Scan services, legal consultation, and access to community resources and educational opportunities — all aimed at helping people make more informed decisions about their lives and take steps in a positive direction.

Thirty people, including several of our own men, successfully had records expunged at this event, helping to remove barriers to their personal success.

For many veterans, the road to healing can be complicated. Oftentimes, the weight of guilt, shame, and trauma from their experiences in the service can make it hard to open up and talk about what’s going on inside.

We are grateful to have veterans in our program who choose to stand up in the face of fear and continue to fight for their recovery by confronting their pain and allowing themselves to feel what they once had to bury.

Today, we honor all veterans who bravely served so that we can enjoy our freedom. Happy Veteran's Day!

For most of his life, Jesse's default was to run when things got difficult. He experienced a lot of loss in his life that left him unsure how to deal with his emotions. It was always easier to just make a mess of things and walk away.

When he arrived at Beacon House, Jesse was scared. The idea of being honest about what was happening inside his head made him want to run again. He didn’t believe he had what it took to stay sober, but he knew he needed to change, so he decided to try anyway.

Jesse’s journey hasn’t been easy. There have been many bumps along the way, but his perseverance continues to carry him forward. Today, he’s working hard to earn his GED and plans to become an electrician one day so he can provide for himself, and when the time is right, he can be the steady, reliable presence his children deserve.
