Since 1954, Lifehouse has opened the doors of opportunity and independence to individuals with developmental disabilities through life-skills training, community integration, advocacy, referrals and community information. We couldn’t be more proud of the progress of the people we support, the satisfaction it has brought to them and their families, and the many beneficial effects of their integration into our community. With the help of our staff, donors, volunteers and local community, we strive to improve the quality of life for the people we serve and their families. Our individualized programs and services are provided in an atmosphere of respect, inspiration and purpose. We currently serve over 250 individuals living independently with support in the community in Marin, Sonoma and San Francisco Counties. Formerly known as MARC, Lifehouse is recognized as an innovative and forward thinking leader, continually striving to provide the highest level of services to the people we support and developing new programs to meet the needs of the community. Lifehouse provided the early leadership for special education, implemented the first employment training program, started Marin Special Olympics, launched community recreation programs for adults, a seniors program, and most recently, programs to address social and recreation needs for teens with developmental disabilities and the increased needs of those with autism. Lifehouse offers a comprehensive skills training model focused on each individual’s needs. We support many individuals with varying disabilities, and the needs of the people we support vary; this can range from two hours per week to 24-hour care. At Lifehouse, each individual participates in developing individual goals and is supported by a team of professionals.

Week 2 of Inclusion Starts with Understanding, Lifehouse’s new IDD education series! 💙

This week, we’re diving into person-centered language. This isn't just about being "polite"; it’s about accuracy and respect. By putting the person before the diagnosis, we acknowledge their individuality, honor their preferences, and focus on their strengths rather than their limitations.

Language is dignity in action. Join us as we shift the conversation to center the individual.

🌟 Staff Spotlight: Annie Aguilar 🌟

We’re thrilled to celebrate Annie Aguilar's recent promotion to Director of Administration and Facilities! Since joining Lifehouse in 2023, Annie has gone above and beyond—not only caring for the individuals we support but also providing guidance and support for her team. Her promotion is truly well deserved.

Annie shares, “I'm excited about this role because it lets me expand my impact and support Lifehouse's mission on a broader scale. This new role provides me the opportunity to take what I've learned on the ground—compliance, safety, team development, and problem solving—and apply it in a way that strengthens the entire organization so we can continue to focus on the excellent care we provide.”

We can’t wait to see Annie continue making a difference across Lifehouse! 💛

Lifehouse History: In the 1970s, care for people with disabilities began shifting from large, impersonal state institutions toward community-based living. This 1970 photo shows Miriam Comito with the young men who lived at her care home for people with disabilities.

When Miriam passed away, she generously donated the house to Lifehouse (then MARC). In 2013, it was renamed Comito House in her honor.

Today, Comito House in Fairfax is home to a vibrant community of individuals supported by Lifehouse’s Independent Living Skills program, many of whom are longtime residents.

We’re excited to introduce our new weekly education series: Inclusion Starts With Understanding 🩵

Each week, we’ll break down intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) topics in a simple, approachable way—and share why inclusion, community, and support matter so much.

This week, we’re starting with the basics: What does intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) mean?

Follow along as we learn together.

We love this photo of our Lifehouse residents at Del Ganado! 💛

Many of the individuals we support have lived alongside one another for years, forming lasting friendships and a true sense of belonging. One of our residents, Jock (far left), has called Del Ganado home for over 30 years. Living in community also means looking out for one another, creating built-in support that helps everyone thrive.

Yesterday we had the absolute joy of welcoming young dancers and families from to Lifehouse, complete with a BIG check and even bigger hearts 💙

As longtime partners, Love2Dance students chose to fundraise for Lifehouse at their recent recital, donating $1,000 raised from concession sales to support our community. Love2Dance believes dance is more than movement—it’s a way to connect, inspire, and give back.

Led by Tara-Caprice Broadwater, who also teaches inclusive dance classes for individuals with IDD, this partnership continues to build community and belonging, one step at a time 💫

For 25 years, Lifehouse’s dance group has thrilled audiences at Great Chefs & Wineries with their high-energy, heartfelt performances. The dancers dedicate months to choreographing and practicing for the special event. “Dancing in front of such a supportive audience makes Chloe feel confident and joyful—you can truly see her shine,” says Lifehouse parent Sally Spencer.

As our largest fundraiser of the year, Great Chefs helps ensure the individuals we support have the opportunity to pursue their passions, build community, and share their talents.

Join us Saturday, April 25 for an unforgettable evening. Early bird tickets are on sale now—grab yours before they’re gone! Visit: greatchefsandwineries.org
