Your human passed on and no one could take you. I will carry that weight for you.

Your medical issues became too much. I will carry that weight for you.

Your age and infirmity became too inconvenient. I will carry that weight for you.

I will carry that weight. I will bear that burden. It wasn’t mine to take but I cannot leave you with it. This is senior and hospice dog rescue.

I will give you shelter. I will give you care. I will help you find your joy again and comfort you through your loss. I will ease your confusion and pain and sadness. I will let you pass next to someone you knew, even if it was only for a little while. I will speak softly to you and hold you and help set you free. I will take that pain to ease yours. I will carry that weight forever for you.

You’d think the more I do this, the easier it gets. But it’s not the case. Every time I hang a collar on the memorial my heart breaks a little more than it did before, but the time between hello and goodbye is now cherished more than ever. A quiet snuggle, a warm body pressed against me wanting comfort. I take none of it for granted.
