Blame, judgement, defensiveness, and shutting down can become way too common in a marriage/relationship dynamic. Emotions are high and important issues are at stake, so it's hard to keep your cool.

Next come resentment and eventually you want to give up on trying.

Working through a disagreement with your partner takes skill, patience, and intention. I've met very few humans who are just naturally good at this. Most of us have to work at it. And if you a "sensitive one" like me, it can really be challenging.

If you think you can be doing better in your relationship but just not sure HOW, let me guide you through the researched based techniques proven to improve your ability to listen and be seen.

Negative self talk can not only sabotage your self worth, it can damage your relationships. Whatever internal dialogue you have active can easily seep out as you view and relate to others.

When you hear critical comments arise, ask yourself, was that a thought I generated, or was that my brain creating a thought. One easy way to discern is to notice if the beginning of that sentence started with "You..." or "I".

If you were sitting on the couch and started to feel hungry, would you say to yourself "You should go get a snack"? Of course not, you'd say "I'm hungry. I'm going to get a snack".

When the mind produces critical thoughts, it usually speaks to you in second person. (you are, you should) This ISN'T you, this is your brain doing it's job and thinking thoughts.

These thoughts do not deserve your energy.

You can let them float away as you refocus on the issue at hand. Then redirect your brain onto feelings of gratitude or appreciation. Even if you've made a mistake in the moment, that's only ONE part of the story. Notice all the other things you did well. Notice what IS working.

Just got back from a long walk

Walking has gotten a bad rap in recent years. People consider walking to be a "too easy" exercise that doesn't bring results. But walking is one of the most accessible and simple ways to burn calories! Also, unlike high intensity workouts, it doesn't stimulate hunger.

But that's not why I went for my walk today.

I was trying to do some writing for a program I'm working on and I felt stuck. The words and the ideas were not flowing and I was starting to feel frustrated.

So I bundled up, put on my hat and headed out the door. The sunlight alone was very helpful because sunlight stimulates neurochemicals that help with mood and motivation.

While I was walking I thought about the content I was writing and came up with several ideas! I spoke them into my phone so I could really flush them out while they were fresh. Plus it prevented me from forgetting them once I returned.

Especially when it is sunny outside it's a good idea to go for a walk. You will benefit your brain, your body, and your emotional health!

Do you struggle with panic symptoms when your anxiety is high?
Let me offer a little tip from Positive Psychology.
The state of Panic and the practice of Gratitude are NOT friends. :)

When anxiety is high and your mind seems hijacked with racing thoughts about everything, try directing your thoughts towards anything you are grateful for. It can be as simple as I'm grateful the sun came out today. Or I feel grateful my friend is here and wants to help, even if they don't know how.
Thoughts of gratitude will help your brain calm the alarm bells and restore normal breathing.
Once you start to feel the shift towards a calmer state of mind, slow your breathe and connect with a support.

I love a nice long holiday weekend, but it sure can destroy a healthy diet and exercise routine! This morning I got back on track with my dance/fitness workout and spinach smoothie.
I'm careful not to hold an expectation of perfection for myself because I know that will set me up for failure. However, I hold the commitment to living a healthy lifestyle because "quality of life" is very important to me. So sometimes I have to reset.

I try to conceptualize my routines as the way I live my life. The holidays are times I get off tract and allow a splurge. When it's over, it's easier to get back to the routines because that's my set-point.

I want to provide space for me to be human and flexible at times. I also want to remain dedicated to living my best life. Striking that balance is helpful in avoiding the feeling of failure. I can't fail because I always return to my base.

It is so hard being a human. Give yourself grace each day as you remind yourself you are doing your best....and that's enough. :)
