If your gut is struggling, your spine might have something to do with it and vice versa

The nerves that control digestion, the stomach, the intestines, the organs involved in that whole process, exit the spine in the mid and lower back. When those segments are restricted or misaligned, the signals regulating digestive function get disrupted.

Bloating, irregularity, acid reflux, and sluggish digestion are not always food problems. Sometimes they are nerve problems wearing a food costume.

This does not replace looking at diet. It means that if you have cleaned up your eating and still feel off, it might be worth asking whether the wiring to the system is clear.

The body works as a system. Treating one piece in isolation while ignoring the channel everything communicates through is like fixing the faucet while the pipe behind the wall is still compromised.

When your body is under stress, your nervous system shifts into a protective state. Muscles tighten, breathing becomes shallow, and the spine compresses. Your biology does not distinguish between a physical threat and a stressful work week. The physical response is the same.

The problem is that many people live in this state continuously. The nervous system never fully recovers.

Chiropractic adjustments have a direct effect on this system. When the spine is aligned and mobile, the body can shift out of fight-or-flight mode more effectively. Patients often describe feeling like they can finally breathe again, even if they didn't realize they were holding their breath.

Stress is inevitable, but your body’s ability to process it is something you can improve.

Dr. Geoff Greenway has helped families in Sandpoint and the surrounding areas reset their stress response for over 20 years. If you feel stuck in a protective state, healing starts with the nervous system.

Spring is officially here! For most of us, that means more time spent in the garden and out on the trails. Before you start hauling bags of soil or heading out for your first long hike, it is a good idea to consider your physical foundation.

Heavy lifting and repetitive movement place significant stress on your spine. When your alignment is balanced, your body handles these demands efficiently. If your structural foundation is slightly off, your muscles have to overcompensate. This is often where seasonal back strain begins. Dr. Geoffrey Greenway focuses on these structural foundations to help you avoid injury and stay active.

We respect your schedule and make it a priority to run on time. You can get the care you need and get back to your spring projects without delay.

You spend a third of your life horizontal.

What your spine does during those hours matters more than most people realize. Sleep is when the discs between your vertebrae rehydrate. It is when the nervous system processes and repairs. It is when the whole system tries to reset.

If you wake up stiff, achy, or more tired than when you went to bed, that is not normal. It is common. Those are different things.

The position you sleep in, the pillow supporting your neck, the mattress under your spine, all of it either helps or hinders that overnight repair process.

A neutral spine during sleep means your nervous system gets to do its job without working around compression or strain. You wake up different when that happens.

Dr. Geoffrey Greenway has had this conversation thousands of times over 26 years. The people who start paying attention to how they sleep are almost always surprised by what changes.

Most people assume chiropractic care is for adults with bad backs.

The first spinal stress many humans experience happens during birth.

After that, learning to walk means falling. A lot. Childhood means tumbles off bikes, heavy backpacks, hours hunched over tablets and homework. By the time kids are teenagers, many of them have been carrying misalignments for years without a single symptom that anyone connected to the spine.

A child's nervous system is developing rapidly. The spine is the channel that communication travels through. Keeping that channel clear during the years the body is building itself is a different kind of investment than waiting until something hurts at 40.

Dr. Geoffrey Greenway has worked with patients from infancy through their eighties. The earlier the attention, the less catching up the body has to do later.

If you get headaches regularly, the answer is probably not ibuprofen.

That is a way to quiet the symptom. It does not touch the source.

A significant number of chronic headaches, tension headaches especially, originate in the cervical spine. The top three vertebrae in your neck have a direct relationship with the nerves that feed the base of your skull. When those vertebrae are restricted or misaligned, the surrounding muscles brace around them constantly. That sustained tension radiates upward.

This is called a cervicogenic headache. And most people who have them have never heard that word.

They have taken a lot of ibuprofen, though.

If you have been managing headaches for years, it is worth having someone look at your neck. Not as a last resort. As a logical first step.

Twenty-six years ago, I walked out of Palmer College in Davenport Iowa with a degree and a clear sense of what I believed about the body. I have only become more certain since that the body is an intelligent, self-regulating system always moving toward health. It is a whole system, functioning together. My job is to remove the interference so the body can do what it already knows how to do. I chose Sandpoint in 2004 because this community lives close to the physical world. People in Sandpoint and the surrounding areas hike, ski, work hard, play hard, and age actively. They needed a chiropractor who understood the body that way. I still do. Every single day. - Dr. Geoffrey Greenway

"The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in a proper diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease."
: Thomas Edison

He said that over a hundred years ago.

Dr. Geoff has been practicing that philosophy in Sandpoint since 2004. Not as a philosophy. As a daily reality, with real people, in a real clinic.

The body already knows how to heal. It was built to. The work is removing whatever is standing in the way of that process, so the system can do what it was designed to do.

That is what chiropractic care, at its core, has always been about.

The purpose of your spine goes beyond holding you upright.

In fact while it is definitely important, it might be the least interesting thing it does.

Every second of every day, your brain is sending signals down through your spinal cord and out to your organs, your immune system, your gut, your heart. And those signals are traveling through a channel made of bone. When those bones shift out of alignment, the signal gets interrupted. Compressed. Distorted.

The result is not always pain. Sometimes it's fatigue that sleep doesn't quench. Digestion that never quite works right. A body that catches every bug that goes around.

This is why people come in for a "bad back" and mention on their third visit that their headaches stopped.

If you are looking for health answers beyond the surface level, Dr. Geoff is here for the families in Sandpoint and the surrounding areas.

Your phone is changing the shape of your neck.

When you look down at a screen, the weight your cervical spine has to manage goes from about 12 pounds to 60. That is not a typo. The angle changes everything.

Over time, the curve in your neck starts to straighten. The muscles fatigue. The nerves that run through that area start to feel it, and not always as neck pain. Headaches. Shoulder tension. Numbness in the hands.

One thing you can do today: hold your phone at eye level as often as you can remember to. Set it on a stack of books. Prop it on your steering wheel while you wait in the pickup line. It feels awkward at first, then it becomes the obvious choice.

Small corrections made consistently are what change a body over time. Not big dramatic interventions.

Maintaining physical resilience during a North Idaho winter relies on how well your nervous system communicates with your muscles. When you are navigating heavy snow or ice at Schweitzer, your brain is processing constant input to keep you balanced. Dr. Geoff has spent 26 years helping people in Sandpoint and the surrounding areas keep those biological systems functioning correctly.

Understanding structural alignment is about more than just comfort; it is about performance and recovery. A well-adjusted spine supports better balance and helps you bounce back faster after a long day in the cold. We focus on these health foundations so you can focus on your next run.

We run on time to respect your schedule, and we offer many ways to pay for your visits. Whether you are a seasoned local or just getting back on your skis, we are here to help you enjoy everything our mountains have to offer. Stop by the clinic to see how we can support your winter adventures.

Athletes have been some of the most consistent chiropractic patients for decades. Not because they get hurt more. Because they figured out that a well-functioning nervous system is a performance advantage. Reaction time, coordination, balance, muscle recruitment, recovery speed, all of it runs through the nervous system. When the spine is aligned and mobile, the signals between the brain and the body travel without interference. When it is not, the body is compensating constantly and most athletes have no idea. Michael Jordan had a chiropractor. Tiger Woods. Joe Montana. This is not a fringe practice in elite athletics. It is standard. You do not have to be a professional athlete for that logic to apply to you. Anyone who asks a physical amount from their body, whether that is a marathon or keeping up with kids, benefits from the same principle.
