March is Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Awareness Month.

While many people associate brain injury with severe trauma, the reality is that mild TBIs and concussions are far more common, and often go unrecognized.

Symptoms don’t always show up immediately.
They don’t always involve loss of consciousness.
And they don’t always look dramatic from the outside.

Throughout March, we’ll be sharing information about:

• Subtle TBI symptoms
• Why recovery isn’t always linear
• Nervous system changes after head injury
• Emotional regulation after TBI
• Brain-based support options in Sandpoint

If you or someone you love has experienced a head injury, even years ago, this month may offer clarity.

By February, many relationships feel the weight of winter too.

More time indoors. Less external movement. Accumulated stress. Less light. Less energy.

Conflict often isn’t just about the topic at hand, it’s about two nervous systems interacting.

When one system feels overwhelmed, it may move toward defensiveness.
When another feels unheard, it may escalate.
Neither response is “wrong.” Both are protective.

Understanding how your nervous system responds under stress can change the tone of communication completely.

In our latest blog, we explore how nervous system patterns shape conflict and how awareness can create safer, more regulated conversations.

If tension has been closer to the surface lately, this may help.

How is your nervous system, really?

This is often the point in winter where:

• Motivation feels flatter
• Irritability shows up faster
• Sleep feels off
• Small things feel bigger than they should

Emotional regulation isn’t about controlling feelings. It’s about having enough internal capacity to experience them without becoming overwhelmed.

When stress accumulates and daylight is limited, that capacity can shrink.

The answer isn’t pushing harder.
It’s noticing sooner.

Slower mornings.
More light exposure.
Gentler expectations.
Asking for support.

Regulation is built in small, consistent ways not dramatic resets.

If this season feels long, your nervous system might simply be asking for steadiness, not pressure.

02/16/2026

By mid-February, winter can start to feel long.

The novelty has worn off. The light is still limited. Energy can dip. Patience can thin. And for many people, emotional regulation feels harder than it did a few months ago.

This isn’t weakness, it’s physiology.

Shorter days and cumulative stress impact how the nervous system functions. When we’re depleted, reactions can become quicker, emotions feel closer to the surface, and recovery takes longer.

In this blog, we explore how winter stress affects emotional regulation and practical ways to support your brain and nervous system through the rest of the season.

𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀

Instead of rushing into resolutions, what if January was about intentions?

Intentions leave room for flexibility, regulation, and real life.
They’re shaped by awareness rather than pressure.

The brain responds best to:

✔ realistic expectations
✔ small, consistent steps
✔ feeling safe and supported

There’s plenty of time for clarity to emerge.

Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs) are far more common than most people realize, especially in active communities like Northern Idaho where winter sports, outdoor adventures, and icy conditions create a perfect storm for slips, falls, and sports-related impacts and could result in a traumatic brain injury. Even minor head injuries can lead to long-term symptoms when the brain’s normal communication signals become disrupted.

Check out our latest blog for more information on how we work with individuals recovering from a traumatic brain injury, concussions, and brain trauma, helping the brain regain balance and function using neurofeedback, QEEG brain mapping, and supportive counseling.

𝗝𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗮𝘀𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

It’s often a time of re-orientation, noticing your energy, your capacity, and what feels supportive as the year begins.

Before setting goals or expectations, it’s okay to pause and ask:

👉 What does my brain and body need right now?

There’s no rush.

You’re allowed to ease into the year gently.
