Sandpoint Medical Massage & Bodyworks, LLC

Sandpoint Medical Massage & Bodyworks, LLC A holistic and effective approach to health care We want to help you get to the bottom of your aches and pains.

We opened in March 2017 in hopes to offer the kind of massage that many folks want but don't know how to find...This isn't a spa and unless explicitly asked for, you won't be getting a "light and airy" massage. We'll use a variety of therapeutic modalities such as: myofascial release, neuromuscular techniques, trigger point therapy, deep stretching, and structural integration. We work with everyone: carpenters, pregnant ladies, baristas, lumberjacks, the elderly, high school football players, dancers, teachers, you name it. We'll work with you and whatever kind of issues you may have.

:: Listening With Your Skin ::

Your skin contains millions of receptors that are constantly gathering information — pressure, temperature, vibration, stretch.

During bodywork, these receptors are continuously communicating with the nervous system.

This is where the work begins.

Through the skin, therapeutic touch becomes a form of communication with the body.

It is a constant exchange of information — one that we learn to pay attention to over time.

:: You Are a Living Ecosystem ::

Each person who walks through our doors brings more than what we can see.

Your skin hosts billions of microorganisms.

Scientists estimate that we carry more non-human cells on and within our bodies than human ones.

Many of these microbes help regulate inflammation, support immune responses, and prevent harmful bacteria from growing.

In a very real way, each of us is a living, breathing ecosystem.

This is something we think about often in this work — the body is constantly interacting with the environment around it.

:: Gratitude for the Skin ::

Over the past month, we’ve taken time to appreciate the integumentary system — the system we encounter first in every bodywork session.

Your skin protects you, senses the world around you, communicates with your nervous system, and continually renews itself.

As we slide into April, we will continue our Year of Gratitude by exploring another remarkable system of the human body.

There is always more to discover.

:: Sunlight and Skin ::

A day like today doesn’t come around every week this time of year.

When sunlight touches your skin, it begins a process that helps the body produce Vitamin D.

Vitamin D is associated with bone health, immune function, mood, and hormone balance.

As bodyworkers, we spend much of our time working with skin indoors — which is why days like this are worth noticing.

Even a few minutes of sunlight on your skin activates one of the many ways this system supports the body every day.

:: Skin and the Nervous System ::

Your skin and your nervous system share a fascinating origin.

During early development in the womb, both systems form from the same embryonic layer — the ectoderm.

From the very beginning of life, these systems are deeply connected.

Your skin is constantly communicating with your brain.

When we work with the skin in bodywork, that conversation often travels deeper into the nervous system.

:: The Doorway Into the Body ::

The skin is the largest organ in the human body.

It covers about 20 square feet and accounts for roughly 15% of your body weight.

For massage therapists, this is the system we meet first.

Through the skin, we begin to understand the body beneath it — the tone of muscle, the movement of fascia, and the subtle shifts that happen during a session.

The skin isn’t just a boundary.
In bodywork, it becomes the doorway into the rest of the body.

:: Continuing Education :: Visceral Manipulation

Before we ever begin working deeper in the body, every session begins the same way — with the skin.

The integumentary system is where we first listen.

Recently, our space hosted a Visceral Manipulation training with Jeffrey Burch — an advanced Certified Rolfer and long-time teacher in this field.

The course filled well in advance, bringing practitioners together for several days of focused study on the relationships between internal organs, connective tissues, and the structures that support them.

While this work reaches far beneath the surface, it always begins with skilled contact through the skin.

Continuing education like this allows therapists to keep refining how they perceive and respond to what the body is communicating — layer by layer.

This kind of study happens quietly, but it directly shapes the care that is offered in the treatment room every day.

:: 340,000 Pounds of Skin ::

Out of curiosity, we recently did some math.

Since opening our doors nine years ago, our therapists have worked with approximately 37,879 bodies.

If the average person carries about nine pounds of skin, that means our hands have met roughly 340,000 pounds of skin over the years.

We consider that an extraordinary privilege.

Every session begins with the skin — the living interface between your body and the world.

It is where our work starts.

:: Year of Gratitude ::

In nine years of practice, we have had the honor of working with 37,879 integumentary systems.
That number stopped us for a moment.

This year at Sandpoint Medical Massage & Bodyworks, we’re beginning a Year of Gratitude for the remarkable systems of the human body.

We’re starting with the integumentary system — your skin, hair, and nails — because it is the system we interact with most directly in our work as bodyworkers.

Every session begins here.

And after tens of thousands of sessions, our sense of awe for this system has only grown.

:: The Wonders of the Body ::

One of the threads that continues to inspire us as practitioners is the human body itself.

The body has an extraordinary capacity to adapt, communicate, and reorganize in response to the conditions around it. The more we study it, the more there is to appreciate.

Beginning this month, we will be sharing a short educational feature highlighting one of the major organ systems of the body — with the hope of inspiring deeper curiosity and understanding for the body you live in every day.

We will begin this week with the integumentary system — your skin — the tissue we interface with most directly as bodyworkers.

Stay tuned.

:: Celebrating Nine Years ::

Throughout the month of March, we will be celebrating nine years of practice with a simple community raffle.

If you are coming in for a session, you are welcome to fill out a ticket and place it in the jar at the front desk. Each Friday we will draw a winner for a 60-, 75-, 90-, or 120-minute bodywork session.

And if you happen to visit on the right day, you may also find birthday cake waiting.

It is our small way of marking nine years of shared trust, care, and connection within this community.

:: Nine Years of Practice ::

This March marks nine years since Sandpoint Medical Massage & Bodyworks, LLC first opened its doors.

Over the years, this space has grown alongside the people who come through it. Some of you have been with us from the very beginning — moving offices with us, receiving care from the therapists who have shaped this practice, and allowing us to witness many of life’s transitions.

We have supported mothers in the final days of pregnancy, cared for infants learning to nurse, worked with those recovering from accidents, and sat quietly with people navigating new diagnoses. We have also had the honor of working with clients through the final chapters of their lives.

What has been created here, in our small corner of North Idaho, is sustained by a shared willingness to care for the human body with attention and respect.

For that, we are deeply grateful.
