Your child's response to BULLYING should be different than their response to conflict or teasing. Bullying provides a way for physically, psychologically, or socially aggressive students to attain or maintain status among their peers. It is likely to elicit feelings of rage, humiliation, or fear in targeted students. Bullying requires intervention from adults in positions of authority for it to end because it is self-reinforcing and allows the aggressive student with a way to control, manipulate, and dominate their peers.

According to a 2009 study in the Journal of Youth and Adolescence, 80 to 90 percent of adolescent girls and 50 to 80 percent of boys report being sexually harassed in school. As for dating violence and sexual assault, this same study showed that approximately 50 percent of all adolescent girls and 15 percent of boys have been sexual assaulted, mostly by an acquaintance. Researchers also found that communicating this as a legal issue created more impact in preventing those from sexually harassing others than describing it as a social issue.
