🐝 A Sweet Tradition Continues at Friends House

Friends House has long cared for its own beehives, and when the previous beekeeper stepped away, Marion Story stepped in. What began as her love for the hum of honeybees has grown into a shared experience with residents who now help tend the hives and learn more about how connected our world really is.

With support from resident volunteers, Marion harvested about 125 pounds of honey and donated $1,500 in net proceeds to Friends House. This generous contribution reflects the community spirit she’s helped nurture.

At Friends House, tolerance isn’t a talking point – it’s how community works.

Here, neighbors come from different walks of life, faiths, and backgrounds, yet live side by side with respect and curiosity. It’s that everyday practice of listening, learning, and finding common ground that keeps our community strong.

On International Day for Tolerance, we’re reminded that understanding isn’t built in a day – it’s built in the way we live together.

An evening of purpose and partnership!

Last night’s event brought together local leaders, Olney Chamber of Commerce members, local business owners, and members of the Friends House community, including our board, team, and Seniors Association, for an inspiring evening of connection and collaboration.

Senator Craig Zucker shared remarks on the power of community engagement, followed by Tom Webb from the Sandy Spring Museum , who entertained guests with Sandy Spring trivia. Resident and Environment Committee member Susan Thomas presented on our new Wildlife Certification, reflecting our ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship.

Gary Johnson, representing the Center for Applied Research in Dementia , announced that Friends House has earned Gold Status in the Montessori-Inspired Lifestyle® program, recognizing our continued dedication to creating supportive, person-centered environments. CEO Phil Burkholder spoke on behalf of Friends House, expressing gratitude for our partners and offering a look ahead at future plans for the community.

Guests also enjoyed an art display by renowned local artist Greg Mort, whose work added a beautiful, creative touch to the evening.

We’re grateful to all the Olney Chamber members and community partners who attended, and to Culinary Director Jason Rosewag and the Friends House Culinary Team for the exceptional food and presentation. Special thanks to Marie Kiser and Mojca Mrak for their thoughtful planning and seamless coordination behind the scenes. 👏

📸 Enjoy a few highlights from the evening below.

Kindness doesn’t always look grand. Sometimes it’s a cup of tea shared, a door held open, or a laugh that turns someone’s day around. ☕💬

At Friends House, kindness isn’t scheduled –it just shows up. In the garden, on walking paths, between neighbors who know that connection starts with a simple act of care.

Here’s to everyday kindness, the kind that makes life here feel a little lighter. 🌿

Today, we honor the courage, service, and sacrifice of all who have served our country. 🇺🇸

At Friends House, we’re grateful to count veterans among our residents, families, and team – individuals whose strength, compassion, and sense of duty continue to inspire our community every day.

In recognition of their service, we also want to share an important resource: the VA Aid and Attendance benefit, which can provide financial assistance to qualified wartime veterans and surviving spouses who need help with daily living or reside in memory support, assisted living, or skilled nursing settings.

Love seeing nature through our neighbors’ eyes.

Here’s a look at “What We See,” the Flower Alley exhibition presented by ArtSpace, featuring Judith Roark (painting) and Roger Roark (photography) – both residents of Friends House.
