Tables full, conversations flowing, and plenty of laughter to go around.
That’s how December socials look at Friends House. 🎄

A big thank-you to Catia, who handled every detail behind the scenes to make the evening feel easy and welcoming. And yes, that’s CEO Phil Burkholder stepping in to serve drinks, because at Friends House, leadership shows up in meaningful, hands-on ways.

We were also touched by a thoughtful gesture from the children at Sandy Spring Friends Meeting , who created soup kit gifts for residents, small packages filled with care, creativity, and a sense of connection across generations.

Moments like these reflect what makes our community here feel grounded and purposeful, neighbors gathering, sharing stories, and enjoying time together.

Creativity shows up in so many forms at Friends House – including the thoughtful ways residents shape their days.

Judith and Roger Roark recently shared how creativity guides their life together, from photography and painting to the choices they make with intention and heart.

A simple winter eco-tip from Friends House: leaving a light layer of fallen leaves in outdoor areas can help insects and small wildlife find shelter during the colder months. It’s an easy way to support the natural habitats across our Certified Wildlife Habitat campus.

“When I walk into Friends House, I feel love, care, and connection in every hallway.”
– Gary Johnson, Center for Applied Research in Dementia

Gary has partnered with Friends House for years — and the warmth and authenticity he describes here are just one of the reasons the Haviland Neighborhood earned Gold Level Certification in Montessori-inspired dementia care through CARD.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: Ana Yeniffer Guevara Rivera

We’re celebrating Ana for the care, organization, and warmth she brings to Friends House every day in our Laundry Department. For more than six years, her attention to detail – fresh, neatly folded, and right where it belongs – has added comfort and dignity for our residents.

Ana’s care happens behind the scenes, but its impact is felt campus-wide. Drop a note of thanks for Ana in the comments! 💚

A quiet moment from last Friday’s snowfall.

The courtyard outside the library turned into a peaceful winter scene — one of those small, simple views residents enjoy throughout the season, without worrying about the shoveling.

At Friends House, meaningful projects often begin with neighbors coming together. When Elaine Yamada and her Lodge neighbors noticed slope erosion behind their homes, they spent months researching solutions and working collaboratively to determine the best approach. After careful study and consultation, the group identified a native wildflower meadow as the most effective and environmentally responsible option.

Recently, their efforts were rewarded with grant funding from the Anacostia Riverkeepers—an important first step that will soon allow them to begin the planting phase. The project has brought neighbors together, strengthened community connections, and reflects Friends House’s long-standing commitment to thoughtful land stewardship.

The Garden Committee continues to lead the way in thoughtful sustainability at Friends House.

Their latest update – five new green composting bins – makes it even easier for residents to contribute kitchen scraps and garden materials that enrich the soil in our two-acre organic garden. The bins are placed around campus every Tuesday afternoon and collected on Wednesday, keeping the system simple and accessible for everyone.

This resident-led effort supports healthier soil, nurtures wildlife-friendly spaces, and brings neighbors together through simple, meaningful action.

The holidays are underway at Friends House, and the tree-trimming crew didn’t disappoint. Residents and team members came together for lights, laughter, homemade cookies, and hot chocolate while decorating the tree indoors — followed by our annual outdoor tree lighting event, a favorite moment every year.
