ARUP Blood Services is a non-profit blood center that holds over 500 hundred blood drives all over the state of Utah in support of the thousands of patients needing blood each year at Huntsman Cancer Hospital, University of Utah Hospitals. ARUP Blood Services needs 100 donors a day including 20 platelet donors a day to support these local Utah hospitals. ARUP Blood Services has donor centers in Sandy and Research Park. We also hold blood drives each day with Utah businesses, high schools, churches, and other community groups.

New research in suggests that artificial intelligence can help identify a common but underrecognized source of laboratory error: IV fluid contamination in complete blood counts.

Investigators from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and University of Utah/ARUP Laboratories developed machine learning models using historical CBC data to detect contamination patterns. Applied to one year of inpatient results, the models estimated that ~2% of eligible CBCs were contaminated and that 6%-9% of RBC transfusions with matching CBCs may have been potentially unnecessary.

According to the authors, the findings demonstrate the feasibility of using Al to retrospectively identify contamination at scale and could inform targeted quality improvement initiatives.

Eliza is a regular blood donor with ARUP Blood Services. Her commitment to donate is personal: a few years ago, her husband received a heart transplant and needed blood transfusions at the University of Utah Hospital. Since then, Eliza has continued to give back by donating blood.

ARUP Blood Services is a non-profit blood center that holds hundreds of blood drives in Utah in support of the thousands of patients needing blood each year at Huntsman Cancer Hospital, University of Utah Hospital and Clinics and Shriners Hospital for Children. ARUP Blood Services needs approximately 100 donors a day including 20 platelet donors a day to support these major Utah hospitals and Clinics. ARUP Blood Services has Donor Centers in Sandy (9786 S. 500 W.) and at Research Park (565 Komas Drive). We are the only blood services organization in Utah that keeps all their blood for local patients. Can you help us save lives in Utah?

ARUP Blood Services encourages all healthy individuals and sponsors of blood drives to schedule appointments and keep commitments to donate blood. Healthy eligible donors of all ages and ethnic groups are needed now more than ever as the blood supply must be constantly replenished.

We also hold blood drives each day with businesses, high schools, churches, and other community groups and need more help as demands continue to grow. To schedule a blood drive or to learn more about how your organization can help, please call Deborah Jordan at 801/583-2787 x2639.
