Seeing the challenges his mother faced with dental care inspired our Dental Hygienist, Ruben, to begin his own journey in dentistry. Today, with more than 10 years of experience, he’s developed a deeper understanding of the lifestyle factors and systemic conditions that can prevent proper hygiene habits - and he strives to share that knowledge with his patients.

Education is at the heart of his approach to care, and he believes in practicing patience with every patient, no matter their age. Whether working with a child or an adult, Ruben never assumes what someone does or doesn’t know. Instead, he meets them where they are and helps them learn. One Saturday each month, hundreds of patients walk through the doors of Serve the People’s Retina Clinic to receive their diabetic retinopathy treatment. It’s a service that so many in our community depend on, and at the center of that care is Retina Specialist Dr. Masumi Asahi.

For Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness Month, we wanted to share the impact of diabetes on eye health and for you to hear directly from the provider behind the care. 🫶❤️

Under clear skies and sunshine, we opened our doors (well, courtyard) to our community and patients this morning. When we say there’s nothing like spending time with the people we serve, we mean it. It’s a gift to hear what’s happening in their lives, how we can help, and provide a bit of hope – especially before the holidays.
