March is Brain Injury Awareness Month. A concussion is a mild form of traumatic brain injury caused by a bump or blow to the head, or a hit to the body that causes the head to move rapidly back and forth. These injuries can occur during car accidents, falls, sports, and recreational activities.

Steps that may help prevent concussions in children include:
• Ensuring children are properly buckled in the appropriate safety seat
• Making sure helmets are correctly fitted for bicycles and micro-mobility devices
• Installing window guards and safety gates to help prevent falls
• Using playground equipment that is appropriate for a child’s age

Seek medical attention if a child experiences:
• Loss of consciousness
• Memory loss after the injury
• Dizziness or balance problems
• Nausea or vomiting
• Vision problems or sensitivity to light
• Headaches

Early evaluation supports recovery and helps protect long-term brain health.

Burn injuries can happen quickly when skin comes into contact with hot objects such as cookware, tools, hot pavement, or heating devices. Children are especially vulnerable, making supervision and prevention essential in everyday environments.

To help reduce the risk of burns:
• Always supervise children around hot objects and liquids
• Turn off heating pads and electric blankets before sleeping
• Have hot pads or long oven mitts ready when cooking
• Always assume pots and pans are hot

For minor burns:
• Cool the burn with running water for at least five minutes
• Remove jewelry and clothing near the burn
• Cover loosely with a clean cloth or gauze
• Seek medical attention if pain persists or a fever develops

Awareness, preparation, and quick response can help prevent complications and support proper healing.
