Age Up Well

Age Up Well πŸ€½πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ Helping mature adults to move, function and perform at their best! I have over 100 USMS top ten times, and am often spotted on the FINA top ten listings.

In my 35-year career as a Physical Therapist, I have been motivated to grow as a professional to bring the best, and most up-to-date, care to my clients. After starting a family I found the fun in Masters Swimming and have been a member with USMS since 2003. I have been a member of multiple National and World record relays. I now give back to USMS by volunteering at the LMSC and National level in leadership roles. I am currently a Level 2 USMS Coach, but will be Level 4 certified soon. I am excited to bring USMS Stroke clinics to Santa Barbara as a certified instructor and am looking forward to exploring the ALTS (adult learn to swim program) in Santa Barbara as a certified instructor. As a lifelong competitive athlete, it has been a special interest of mine to prevent impairments and pain, and optimize function and performance. As I grew as a Physical Therapist, it became apparent that movement and function without pain was not a given for most clients; young and more mature. Some of this musculoskeletal pain was due to disease processes, some due to overuse injuries, and some due to motor patterns adapted to life styles and habitual movement patterns. Twenty-five years ago, I became a board certified clinical specialist in orthopaedic physical therapy. The training to gain this specialty certification enabled me to provide the best care for my clients with musculoskeletal conditions, it added it to my skills in neurological physical therapy I gained early in my career and blended with my belief in treating the entire person and not just one impairment or dysfunction. I also had the opportunity to work at one of the regional hospitals that treated hemophilia. It allowed me to learn about HIV, Cancer, and the rehabilitation of other systemic disease processes, becoming certified in lymphedema therapy, and serving as the President of the American Physical Therapy Association’s Academy of Oncologic Physical Therapy. Having built a strong foundation of combining evaluation and treatment of systemic impairments with neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction, I came to realize that our health care system treats age itself as an impairment. This led me to train for, and become board certified in, geriatric physical therapy. I am determined to help clients Age Up Well and be able to move, function, perform at their best in order to live healthy, high quality and pain free lives. In 2021, I finished a Neuroplasticity Certification from MIT. This training program has helped me pull all of my knowledge of the most inner circuits that drive us as humans, allow us to either thrive, or become the pitfalls of aging. I look forward to empowering you to Age Up Well.

Exercise snacking, getting up from being sedentary about every 60 min has been shown to increase glucose sensitivity and help with weight management / weight loss.Β  Try it!

5-10 sit to stands and try to come up on toes for that extra push. Walk in place for 2min. Do a dance step for 2 min.

Give me more ideas!

Get bang for your movement! This works all joints, works endurance and works the big muscles in your body. Great exercise to do when stopping on road trips, after long zoom calls, when it’s cold and rainy, or just for fun. The finish on your toes adds a bit of balance.

This month has been Breast Cancer Awareness month.

Let's encourage each other to get Mammograms, breast ultrasounds and do our breast exams. It affects women pre, during and post menopause. When detected early, treatment is effective!

As a lymphedema specialist, I am passionate about education on post surgical / post treatment guidelines to avoid painful swollen arms. DM me if you have questions. I started the breast cancer rehab program at a major medical center in Los Angeles and my practice has included lymphedema care for the past 25 years.

It was World Arthritis Awareness Day earlier this month.

In the US, 1.3m knee replacements and 760, 000 total hip replacements take place every year. The main cause is osteoarthritis causing pain and loss of function. Joint health is maintained with movement and proper alignment.

If you have a replaced joint, proper rehab is critical in order to return to a activities and pain free life. I can help you with both! Drop me a DM!

Osteoporosis affects young and old people, men and women, but it is most prevalent in older, post-menopausal women.

Weakening of bone makes the bones brittle and more susceptible to fracturing due to falls or other stresses of life. To keep bones healthy and strong, the most effective thing to do is weight trainingΒ  75-85% of 1 rep max weight for 6-10 reps for 2-3 sets, 2-3x per week. A nutritious diet and supplementation of choice can also be helpful.

DM me questions about both lifestyle choices and strength training methods. This Physical Therapist and Lifestyle Coach has you covered!Β

Experiencing the seasons of life is a positive privilege. Just because you are in one season, does not mean you have to become the stereotype!

Surround yourself with younger people, focus on all the great wisdom, life experiences you have had as opposed to lamenting β€œgetting older”. Aging up can be a wonderful journey when you are present in life!
