Responding to a baby with compassion isn’t always an innate skill for new parents.

Many parents may have not had experience with babies before, or may be dealing with their own stress and anxiety. This can make it difficult for them to respond to baby’s needs in a compassionate way.

Here are some tips on responding compassionately:
❤️ Responding with compassion helps to build a strong bond between parent and child. This directly impacts a baby’s social and emotional development.
🧡 When responding to your baby, speak softly, hold and comfort your baby and respond in a gentle reassuring way.
💛 Be gentle and patient with your self, you are learning your baby and your baby is learning you
💚 New parents often neglect their own needs in order to care for their baby, take time for yourself, get a massage, take a nap, or go for a walk. When you are rested and relaxed, it is easier to respond with compassion.
💚 Get educated. Learning more about your baby’s development and needs can help you feel more empowered.
💙 Find a support group or a community of support. We were not meant to do this alone! It takes a village.

🌎Happy World Doula Week! It is hard not to get a little emotional reading all the beautiful words shared by families and birth keepers this week.

Doulas witness the strength and resilience of birthing people, helping them navigate the challenges and joys of bringing a new life into the world, and the journey that unfolds afterwards. They hold space, squeeze hips, and walk beside women and birthing parents during a most sacred and fragile time.

Being a Doula isn't about your certification or how many births you have attended. Being a Doula is in your soul.

Thank you to all the Doulas for the important work you do! We have tagged a few local Doulas who are tirelessly working to not only support Families but change the culture surrounding birth.

🌼It's the first day of Spring and as we look around, the wildflowers remind us that warm and bright days are ahead.

In some ways, it has felt like a 3-year-Winter. As we listen to our colleagues and to parents, it seems that we are all emerging from a colder, darker time: there is a palpable and hopeful shift in the Community, a sense that when we work together, not only are we stronger, but we can do hard things.

Our team is not alone in feeling the energy and renewal of the season and in the near future Then Comes Baby will be going through a rebirth and renewal of its own. More good things are coming!

Stay tuned for some exciting announcements in the upcoming weeks!

Even at birth - with an immature visual system that allows them to see only about 12 inches in front of them - babies prefer to look at faces, especially yours.

Their vision improves quickly - by around 2-4 months, babies begin to recognize their primary caregivers and even their favorite objects.

Then Comes Baby is here to meet you where you are. Because we’ve been there, too, and many of us are right there with you in the parenting trenching now. As parents and professionals who have been at this work for decades, we make it our business to offer concrete support in times of need and help families navigate the steep learning curve of new parenthood.

Now, three months into our “soft” opening, our spectacular team is excited to roll out more of what we have to offer. To help us map out our next steps, we aim to refresh our sense of what you, as a new or expecting parent in the Santa Barbara area needs and wants right now.

You tell us - how do we best show up for you here and now? What are you hungry for and what lights you up? What are your “pain points” that you really hope to have a better net of support for to create more ease and joy in your life? This survey will also address your comfort around the services we provide during this stage of the pandemic.

If you are a parent/caregiver of a little 24months or younger, please take 5-10min to take our survey here: https://docs.google.com/forms/u/5/d/e/1FAIpQLSdmXjeZjhI_0E8nYfUF4rJQN4ieJpGEFhOVZ5C3gzK06pa-1g/viewform?usp=send_form

As a token of appreciation, you can choose to enter to win one of six $25 gift cards or remain anonymous.
