to produce and administer insulin to people with diabetes. The Institute has made seminal contributions to improving the health and medical management of people with diabetes ever since. Dr. Lois Jovanovic, the former director of SDRI, pioneered research and treatment guidelines that completely changed how we treat diabetes in pregnancy worldwide. SDRI has developed a vision for future research centered around conducting multi-organ system research in people and taking advantage of recent advances in research technology. This type of research is complex and laborious but essential for making advances relevant to people with metabolic diseases. 👏 Congratulations to and Pinkson! 👏 We love seeing creativity and courage come together in My Type, a short film inspired by Nicole’s own T1D journey and a beautiful love story from the T1D community.

Creative inspiration comes from all sorts of places. In the case of the upcoming short film “My Type," sisters and producing partners Nicole MacNaughton and Kimberly Danek Pinkson’s inspiration was twofold: from Nicole’s 2025 diagnosis with the autoimmune disease, type 1 diabetes (T1D), and from a young love story profiled in 'People' magazine.

The couple — Zach White, 23, and Elise Scalfani, 26 — connected on a social media account for people living with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Zach is the son of one of Nicole and Kimberley’s childhood friends, and once the producers heard the story, “We did some brainstorming together and the idea for our film, ‘My Type,’ was born,” shared Nicole.

“‘My Type’ is a modern love story about courage, connection, and the beautiful messiness of being human,” says Kimberly. “The characters have T1D but the film is anchored in universal themes we can all relate to.”

Our Story

Dr. William D. Sansum, who brought renown to Santa Barbara in 1922 as the first physician in the U.S. to produce and administer life-saving insulin to patients with diabetes, founded the nonprofit organization in 1944. Today, under the leadership of Ellen Goodstein, Sansum Diabetes Research Institute remains an extraordinary place, where diabetes research, education, and care have improved the lives of people worldwide who suffer from this serious disease. SDRI has gained international recognition for its work to develop an artificial pancreas, its success in developing protocols to increase the incidence of healthy babies born to women with diabetes, and its work with people with and at risk for type 2 diabetes. Physicians and researchers continue to develop new treatment protocols for people with diabetes. New drugs and medical devices are clinically tested to ensure their efficacy and safety. It is our intention to use our past and present accomplishments to guide us into the future – to tap into the energy and commitment that made Sansum Diabetes Research Institute what it is today – a worldwide leader in diabetes research, education, and care.
