Tiana Leeds, LMFT

Tiana Leeds, LMFT Hello and welcome to my therapy practice. My aim is to support you as you move toward healing and wholeness.

You may be here because you are looking for help, either for yourself or a loved one, and I am honored to be part of that journey. I take a collaborative, practical, and compassionate approach and empower you to recognize and utilize your strengths as a means of moving through fear, sadness, and insecurities. While I focus primarily on serving women in their 20s and 30s, my practice is open to all ages, cultures, genders, sexualities, and relationship configurations. If you feel that I may be a good fit for you as your counselor, give me a call and we can talk about what you are going through and set up an appointment if it seems right for you. I welcome the opportunity to support you in creating new, healthier, more productive ways of living, and ultimately, help you achieve increased peace and connection both with yourself and others. I am licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT #99393). My clinical training includes working with diverse client populations in individual, couple, family, and group settings at the Family Therapy Institute, the Community Counseling and Education Center, and AHA!. At AHA!, I worked as an in-school and after-school group facilitator for teens and as an individual adolescent counselor. Prior to my work with AHA!, I collaborated with a team of teachers and UCSB Ph.D. candidates to develop a behavior reflection program at Canalino and Harding Elementary Schools. This program was later developed into a social and emotional learning app called Hello Yello. I serve on the board of the Santa Barbara chapter of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (SB-CAMFT) as the Chief Financial Officer and have been an SB-CAMFT board member since 2015. I am also a statewide CAMFT member and have been since 2014. On a more personal note, outside of my love for psychology and the therapeutic journey, I find joy walking in nature, painting, and cooking. The things that nourish me most are time with family and friends, time in nature, and learning and practicing the Danish art of Hygge.

I recently contributed to a mindbodygreen article for people going through a quarter-life crisis. Something I didn't include though is that my own shift from quarter-life crisis to aligned life path happened in a one-room public library in Bali when I picked up the 1960s therapy textbook called "Scripts People Live."

Don't worry: It's not uncommon.

Want to know how to be a better listener so you can connect with others more easily and deepen your relationships? Mindbodygreen shares my thoughts in this article on how to listen in a way that helps others feel comfortable opening up.

Because it doesn't feel good to be ignored.

I stand in solidarity with all those impacted by racism and systemic oppression. I will continue to support all who are speaking out against societal injustices. As a therapist, I reaffirm my commitment to creating a safe space for healing from pain and repeated trauma. As a fellow human, I reaffirm my devotion to contributing meaningfully to humanity in ways that lift us all up.

We know that dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and endorphins are the quartet of chemicals responsible for our happiness. Each of these neurotransmitters plays a distinct role, and by paying attention to how we’re feeling and matching it to what we're needing, a little self-care can go a long way. Here’s what you need to know. When you’re experiencing procrastination, self-doubt, and lack of enthusiasm, you need more dopamine. When you want to feel more intimacy and connection, oxytocin is your best go-to. When you’re feeling lonely, unimportant, or depressed, you need serotonin. And to alleviate anxiety and pain, you can look to endorphins. Here’s how to increase each of these four key players.

Let's go back to school just for a few minutes. Part of being antiracist is knowing in what ways we are prejudiced - both the conscious, explicit ways and the subconscious biases we hold implicitly. Consciously, we may think that we're completely unprejudiced, but usually, this is far from the case, even when we don't want it to be. Racism runs deep - it's a systemic issue and one that we are steeped in our whole lives; the water we swim in, so to speak. Taking an honest inventory of ourselves, including our more hidden, ugly sides, can increase our conscious awareness of attitudes that contribute to the problem rather than to the solution. Uncovering these implicitly held beliefs isn't always easy. Even Harvard couldn't do it - https://www.vox.com/identities/2017/3/7/14637626/implicit-association-test-racism! But it's worth looking inward to work towards discovering these parts of ourselves anyway. Inner work is part of how we dismantle that within us which brings others harm.
