Any other young therapists struggle with crippling IMPOSTER SYNDROME?! 🙋🏼‍♀️

I constantly struggle with harsh comparisons and feeling like I don’t know enough or I’m not doing enough to serve my clients! Couple this with the ADHD shame I feel around staying on top of all the necessary administrative tasks of running my own business- and my mind can be a pretty unkind place at times. But with any challenge- we GET to choose how we respond. Here’s a list of strategies that help me work through Imposter Syndrome as a Private Practice Speech Therapist.

Where does time go?! Almost 4 years ago the little girl on the right was one of my first private clients! A few years after graduating her I get a call from Mom that baby bro could use some support with his speech development. Fast forward to today, O is now the most amazing little assistant and A is thriving after a few months of sessions!

It’s such an honor to see my clients grow into awesome little humans and watch their communication and confidence flourish. I’ll miss you guys 💕🥹

This month I’ve been onboarding lots of new GLP clients and I couldn’t be more stoked about it! I love providing parent education about ways that we can support these kiddos toward flexible, self generated language!

Utilizing the Natural Language Acquisition framework we can move beyond delayed echolalia and scripting… but without the right approach to therapy and modeling kiddos can stay stuck in early stages of delayed echolalia.

Later this summer I plan on hosting a webinar to dive deep into all things GLP and answer related questions about how to support this population!
If this is something you’d be interested in please DM me so I can add you to my email list!

Throughout my career I’ve seen countless IEP goals to increase eye contact 🙄 To many, this may seem like a well meaning and helpful skill to target. However by listening to the voices of autistic adults we know how uncomfortable it can be to force neurotypical traits such as eye contact.

I love wearing my “Eye contact is overrated” tee for all the great conversations it leads to. Link in my bio to purchase one!

Taking a moment to talk about typical speech sound development. The first graphic highlights each sound’s age of acquisition. Last year, new developmental norms came out, shaking up the field and changing the way we make treatment decisions. Previously, the age of acquisition for the R sound was 6 years old but recent research indicates that over 90% of 5 year olds have mastered /r/.

We used to take more of a “wait and see” approach with some of these sounds but especially since making the shift to private practice, I now target /r/ as early as age 5, and have seen great results with many of my younger kiddos.

Stay tuned for some tips and tricks for how to elicit some of these later sounds when they’re not coming easily.
