Part of my winter self-care ritual every year is making bone broth and hearty soups with all the leftover holiday feasts ✨

Especially this year — after getting sick over the holidays — this felt like the perfect way to infuse all that seasonal flavor into something deeply nourishing and restorative.

I freeze leftover bones in a bag and, when I have time, throw them all into a pot and let them simmer. This batch was a mix of ham bone + chicken carcass (sometimes I’ll stick to just one type).

Normally I use the Instant Pot to save time — only 1–2 hours. But this time I went stovetop to conserve power while it was too rainy to charge via solar ☔️ (that takes about 8–12 hours).

I’ll often add astragalus, shiitake or reishi mushrooms, and later build soups with ginger, garlic, onions, and peppers. It’s one of my favorite ways to pair herbs with deep mineral nourishment during winter 🥣✨

What’s your favorite thing to add to bone broth?

Sleep is not optional — it’s foundational 🌙

When we “burn the candle at both ends,” we don’t become more productive… we just make the candle shorter.

Here are 5 simple practices to restore your sleep cycle naturally:
🌿 Keep a consistent bedtime
🍷 Avoid sugar & alcohol at night
☀️ Get afternoon sun exposure
🫖 Use calming teas + magnesium earlier in the evening
🧘‍♀️ Create a 15-minute wind-down ritual

Your nervous system needs rhythm, safety, and rest.
Save this for tonight 💾✨

🌾 Herb of the Week: Oatstraw
Oatstraw is deeply nourishing — especially for tired, overstimulated nervous systems.

It nourishes your nervous system from the inside out.

Rather than stimulating, oatstraw rebuilds. It offers mineral-rich support for:

-Nervous system fatigue
-Stress recovery
-Mood steadiness
-Long-term resilience

This is a winter herb — slow, restorative, and steady. Perfect for times when rest and structure need to coexist.

If your body feels worn down, oatstraw meets you where you are.

One of our favorite daily tonic herbs for long-term resilience ✨
Save this for your herbal toolkit 🌿

Your morning ritual doesn’t have to be complicated.
Sometimes it’s just you, your dog, fresh air, and movement — and that’s enough to create clarity and calm.

01/26/2026

Morning rituals don’t have to be complicated to be powerful.
This is about creating small moments of presence before the day begins — a cup of tea, a deep breath, a quiet pause. When we start the morning gently, the nervous system follows.

What’s one small ritual you’re carrying into today?

Detox isn’t about restriction — it’s about clarity.

This ritual supports gentle emotional and digestive clearing while helping you map rhythms that feel supportive rather than overwhelming. Dandelion root encourages flow, digestion, and grounded focus as we prepare for the next season.

Reflect without judgment.
Name what nourishes.
Release what drains.
Choose one small daily rhythm.

You don’t need a full reset — just a steady step forward.

Ginger is one of our grad Alyssa’s go-to herbs every winter — and for good reason.

From warming cold hands and feet, to supporting digestion, to helping the body stay resilient through seasonal shifts, this spicy root does a lot with very little.

Nettle is one of our most mineral-rich nourishing herbs.

It supports:

- Energy levels
- Immune resilience
- Bone, hair, and skin health
- Replenishing depleted reserves

Winter fatigue is often less about motivation and more about nourishment. Nettle helps rebuild the foundation — quietly, consistently, and deeply.

Strong systems are built with steady support.

We’re beginning this year by rooting new traditions — slowly, intentionally, and with care.

Planting a tree felt like a simple ritual, but also a powerful one. A reminder that what we nurture today becomes what holds us tomorrow.

May this year be about grounding, tending, and choosing rhythms that last.

Tulsi is often called a clarifying herb — not because it forces focus, but because it helps the nervous system soften enough for clarity to emerge.

This adaptogenic plant supports:

Stress resilience

Emotional grounding

Mental clarity during overwhelm

Sustainable habit-building

Tulsi is especially supportive during transitions, when the mind wants to rush ahead but the body needs time to land.

A beautiful ally for starting the year gently — with intention instead of pressure.

Hello!

Artemisia Academy provides community & land based herbal education for Santa Barbara and the Southern California region. As the only herb school in Santa Barbara & surrounding counties, and one of only 4 herb schools on Southern California, we teach convenient condensed courses, and weekend classes specifically designed for commuters and people with busy lives.

Classes were originally a part of Herbalist Emily Sanders' practice Active Alchemy. However, as interest in the herbal arts has increased, she moved more in the direction of herbal education and founded the first herb school in Santa Barbara in an effort to reconnect people to healing themselves, their land & their community.

The Artemisia Academy of Herbal Arts & Healing currently offers herb walks about uses of local & native plants, hands-on medicine making workshops, and an 8-month Herbal Apprentice Program, giving students who want to begin their journey as a Community Herbalist a place to get there feet wet with a comprehensive introductory course to Herbalism & Holistic Healing.

Artemisia Academy is in the process of expanding to offer an intensive 2-year clinical program. At this point we welcome supporters and donations of all kinds. If you would like to get involved in the launch of the herb school to its full potential, please write to us at info@ArtemisiaAcademy.com.
