Become a Hospice Volunteer — Make a Difference When It Matters Most

Our volunteers come from all walks of life and from all segments of the community. Some come to us with a desire to give back to the community or a personal calling to do hospice work. Others have directly benefited from the services of Hospice of Santa Barbara. HSB has a dynamic volunteer program. As part of the Patient Care Services team, Patient Care Volunteers enhance the quality of life of those impacted by a serious illness and their families by providing social, emotional, and practical support.

We are currently recruiting for our upcoming Hospice of Santa Barbara Volunteer Training. This role is ideal for individuals who:
• Are compassionate and dependable
• Are comfortable sitting with serious illness and the unknown
• Want to serve their community in a meaningful way

No prior experience is needed, just compassion, reliability, and a commitment to serving others.
Comprehensive training and ongoing support are provided.

Our next Patient Care Volunteer Training has been scheduled for April 22nd-May 27th, 2026. Training sessions are held on Wednesdays from 12:00-3:00 pm and applicants must attend all six weeks. Applications must be received by March 15th. Apply at https://www.hospiceofsb.org/volunteer.

If you would like more information about volunteer opportunities, call 805-563-8820 or email our Volunteer Services Department at efreebernt@hospiceofsb.org.

The first time you open up an Advance Directive, the medical language and legal jargon can be overwhelming. If you’re left wondering where to start, the back of the MyCare Advance Directive might be the right place to begin your journey. Pages 15-17 of the MyCare document cover your non-medical wishes and values including:

What brings your life meaning right now?
What does a "good day" look like to you?
Who do you want by your bedside?
What do you want your funeral or memorial service to look like?

Starting with your values – starting with your heart – makes the rest of the process easy. Visit www.getitdonesb.org for conversation starters to get you moving!

You’ve spent a lifetime being responsible—caring for your family, your career, and your home. Completing an Advance Directive is the natural "final flourish" of a responsible life. It’s about making sure your care stays in your hands. You’ve worked hard for your independence; let’s keep it that way. View our resources at www.getitdonesb.org.

Congratulations, Colby Nolan, Bereavement Trainee, for 1 year with Hospice of Santa Barbara!

Colby Nolan is a Marriage and Family Therapist Trainee currently serving as the bereavement counselor at Goleta Valley Junior High through Hospice of Santa Barbara. He primarily works with adolescents, supporting them through the challenges of grief, loss, and emotional transition. Colby takes a person-centered approach to therapy, emphasizing empathy, presence, and the creation of a safe, accepting space for clients to explore their experiences. Through his work, Colby has learned the importance of turning toward death and loss, rather than away—offering clients the space to process, reflect, and grow.

Thank you, Colby!

We can hope for the best while still being prepared for the unexpected. Planning for medical emergencies doesn’t mean "giving up" or “jinxing” ourselves —it’s an act of self-respect and control over our own care. It ensures that no matter what the future holds, your voice remains the loudest in the room. Thinking about completing an Advance Directive? Let’s talk about your "what ifs”! Call us at 805-456-4665 or visit us at www.getitdonesb.org.
