Wisdom is….
Being able to appreciate now what you will miss later.

My first thought this morning was “i wish my kids wouldn’t wake me up at 6am randomly” then as I brushed my teeth and got ready for the day I thought about how much I am going to miss their little snuggles in the morning. The flopping around in bed as they literally say they will be still and go back to sleep etc. is super cute. It’s easy to internalize this sentiment when we think about kids. They are only young for so long after all.
-
Fast forward to how many years we spend as fully grown adults…. Probably most of those years are spent thinking about everything else other than our health is going to be 1/3/5/10 years from now. How much would you miss putting your socks on without back pain, sneezing without pulling a muscle, or getting up from a nice nap on the couch WITHOUT a broken neck?
-
Perspective goes well with all choices. Perspective comes from experience, but wisdom comes from learning from experiences you DIDNT have to have to learn the lesson. Think of what wisdom is in the first place… perspective (from experiences) that guides choices, understands, AND acts on consequences. (If I were ever to make wine, I would name it perspective…) I’ve never had a client that said… “Marcel, I’m so glad I didn’t exercise all my life and ate s**t food” rather, I hear “I wish I would have…” and what ever finishes the rest of that sentence usually sounds a lot like wisdom.
-
What health thing are you going to miss 1/3/5/10 years from now?
-
Or rather, what are you doing now for yourself that will keep you moving how you want to move 1/3/5/10 years from now?

Lifting in the wild!
—————————
Remember folks, training in the gym is all about learning skills that you apply to your daily life (in the wild).

Pistol get ups
—————————
saw my pistol get ups and raised me some ankle weights. Challenge accepted (obviously)!
-
I’m a lucky guy to work with such dedicated and strong clients. Thanks for pushing yourself and leading by example nikki! You’re making the world a healthier (and better) place.
-
This was part of our Weird-Strong class. M-W-F at 7am. Monday is upper body, Wednesday is lower body, Friday is peripheral stuff (I.e. extra weird!). DM for details and how to sign up.

Remove restrictions
—————————
I had 10 minutes
I had a 20kg kettlebell
I had a 20lb weight vest
-
My goal was continuous movement for those 10 minutes.
-
I didn’t follow a script
No one told me if I had good form
I removed the restrictions of what is right and wrong and opened the door for a flow state.
-
My goal was achieved.

Ready for the Spartan race tomorrow!
—————————
Nothing like throwing a thick piece of metal through wood to get in touch with the primal side.
-
My family would be eating well tonight :)

Birthday challenge
—————————
Every year for my birthday I like to do something very physically/mentally demanding. Some years I can complete the challenge, other years I can’t. This year I set out to do a mile of the strength axle. I only made it to 1/2 mile (it took 42 minutes). I maybe could have pushed for another 1/4 mile but I would have probably hurt something in the process. I’ve come to realize injury isn’t worth it anymore (I have pushed myself to that injury point in the past). My mind and body are more in sync now…
-
Challenges like this remind me that I can do extremely hard things. Things that require mental and physical strength. Things that less than 1% of the rest of the earth would consider doing. I don’t want to sit at the top of a bell shaped curve. My life will never feel like that either. The beautiful thing about pushing boundaries like this is that EVERYTHING else I do in life feels so much easier in comparison. I don’t get bothered by Monday mornings, my day is not ruined when I spill my coffee, I can and do still show up and give my 100% to every situation regardless of what’s going on in my life. Age does not define me. A single event doesn’t define me. The accumulation of all my trials makes me stronger and full of appreciation for life.
-
We (humans as a whole) have so much to offer. I hope I inspire some of you to push your limits and find your true potential each and every moment you live. Be your best. Give your best. Do your best. But understand that you don’t really know your best until you’ve explored the edge of your capabilities. One exposition into the edges of your capabilities is not sufficient though. You must make that pilgrimage at regular intervals (like training) to stay connected to who you really are.
-
Fear and failure are your friends. They remind you that you are doing meaningful and challenging things.

Dad vibes
—————————
I don’t have the strongest squat or bench press but my dad game is strong AF.
-
I’m building two wonderful humans up to be kind, conscientious, healthy, strong, accepting, anti-racist, respectful, self-loving, generous, independent thinking people.
-
My son just randomly started doing these on the bench, then asked me to come over so he could teach them to me (I wasn’t doing any type of push work at the park before hand either). My daughter is adventurous enough to just try whatever and came to do my final set of hand stand walk with me. Definitely fun times!

My weight vest is named Hunter
—————————
This was at the end of the night. Fun times with challenging ourselves to find training and play in the same moment. He’s 150lbs. I would have made it up (easy V1) if he didn’t fall off :)

Oh well… we laughed, we climbed hard and played. Can’t ask for more than that.

Just because
—————————
I love a good challenge. That’s actually one of the ways that helps me stay strong. I see something heavy and I just have an urge to try to pick it up. It’s the act of trying, the attempt, that builds the strength. Sometimes I get heavy things off the ground, sometimes I don’t. BUT, I always try my best.
-
Anyway here’s some fun stuff we played with today. Hope it inspires you to pick up heavy things (within your capacity) also!

Core keeps you stable
—————————
Often times people confuse ab work for core work.
-
Your abs connect your ribs to your pelvis. Their primary job is to flex (meant as spinal flexion or bending your spine like you’re reaching for your toes) your spine by pulling the two ends together. They are also involved in isometric stabilization of your spine. But a lot of other muscles also play a role in stabilizing your spine (obliques, transverse abdominis, erector spinae, etc.).
-
So, when you do exercises that require your spine to be stable, you’re doing core work.
-
If you want to specifically train your core, then you need to do movements that exert a leverage force on your spine.
-
The first exercise I’m doing is meant to train my triceps and my core. As I descend, I’m changing the leverage force on my spine and as I ascend I have to use my triceps to push me back up.
In the second exercise, I’m targeting my shoulders and my abs by pulling my legs towards my body (contracting the lower portion of my abs) and then doing the shoulder press. There is some core involved because I am keeping my spine stable once I bend my hips but it’s not my main focus.
-
Let your intention drive your exercise choices and make sure your choices reflect your intention. If those don’t align, you’re probably need to make a different choice, or switch your intention. Both are acceptable.

Check in time
—————————
Front splits progress and pigeon lunge maintenance.
Getting there for those front splits. By the end of 2022 I’ll be resting on the floor. Why? Just because it feels nice to be stretchy and strong (middle splits is still a long way off).
-
For the pigeon lunges, I don’t do them often, but it’s nice to get my nose to my toes… as in, the work we do at 3Fit totally maintains and or improves flexibility and strength without even training specific positions. That’s pretty powerful stuff.
-
Check out our “Weird Strong” classes to find out how we blend FRC principles with “traditional” strength training to supercharge your results in ALL ASPECTS of your fitness.

Conditioning highlights
—————————
Spartans probably trained for all types of situations. Climbing, pushing, pulling, etc would have been staples in their routine (with combat practice built in of course).
-
I wouldn’t mind having the prowess of a Spartan. So I’m training to feel like I can do what Spartans do.
-
Todays training was as follows:
200m run
Predator chin up eccentrics
Single arm mace swing
Heavy forward lunges
Weighted dips
Toes to bar
Army crawl
3 sets
Then 20 KB swings and 10 plyo push ups, 5 sets
-
We are feeling it today for sure.
