Today I want to share a story that really stayed with me....
One of our very young patients was finally diagnosed with a rare condition called MOGAD (Myelin Oligodendrocyte Glycoprotein Antibody–Associated Disease). This diagnosis did not come easily. Like many families experience, there were moments when concerns were dismissed and reassurance was given that “everything looks normal.” But something wasn’t right—and thankfully, the family kept pushing for answers. Our eye exam and scans definitely showed that something was not right. Further referrals were advised.
This is a powerful reminder of how critical eye exams are, especially in children. The eyes are often a window into neurological and systemic health, and subtle findings can sometimes be the first clue that something more is going on.
It’s also an important reminder to trust your instincts as a parent or patient. If something doesn’t feel right, keep asking questions, seek second opinions, and advocate for yourself or your child—even when the medical community says there’s nothing wrong. Early detection and persistence can truly change outcomes.
To my fellow eye care colleagues: stories like this reinforce how vital it is to remain attentive, thorough, and open-minded. Listening closely to our patients and respecting their concerns can make a life-changing difference.
We are so proud of this brave little patient and their family, and we are grateful to be part of a profession that can help uncover answers when they are most needed. 💙
