Today, Saturday, December 21st, is the winter solstice, and tonight is the longest night of the year. When dawn breaks on the 22nd, we welcome back the sun, celebrating the seed of summer’s warmth in the coldest time of the year.
Winter, cold, darkness, contemplation and reflection are all Yin qualities. The winter solstice, along with the weeks just preceding and following it, are a good time of year to embrace a state of quietness and Yin nourishing stillness.
In TCM, we recommend a long and deep night’s sleep during the winter months. Going to bed by 9pm and not waking until 7am is ideal. Think of it as a mini hibernation each night, conserving and nourishing your vital Yin energies for the year ahead.
Now is also a time for quiet reflection, for connecting with the great unconscious, for looking inward and meditating on what we find there. This can sometimes feel counter to how our consumeristic society encourages us to celebrate this time of year, but carving out quiet time is key to your mental health and longevity!
Mindfully lighting candles at dinnertime, solitary cups of tea by the fire, long walks, and relaxing arts and craft activities are all great ways to nourish Yin and embrace the subconscious.
So get some sleep, embrace your inner introvert and nourish that Yin!
Happy Winter Solstice!

Summer has arrived! On June 20th the northern hemisphere experienced the summer solstice, the time of year when both sunlight and the warming, expansive Yang energies are at their peak.
In TCM, each season is associated with an organ and element pair and summer corresponds with the Heart and Fire. The Heart is known as the “Little Emperor,” and it is representative of the pure, childlike feelings of love and trust and wonder that rest deep within you. Now is the time of year to be with friends and loved ones that you feel deeply connected to. Take a walk together in nature, share a meal, write a short note and pop it in the mail. Find ways to connect with and be near those you love. It will warm your Heart and theirs – and nature has given you the longest days of the year to make time for it!
Time outdoors is encouraged during the summer months, and TCM recommends waking with the dawn, having a siesta at midday when the heat is at its strongest, and retiring a few hours after the sun has set. It is recommended during this time of year to engage in social, as well as creative and joyful, activities. Playfulness is key. It is the time of year to let our serious, grown-up selves take a nap while we build sandcastles and eat watermelon with friends.
With all this exuberant Yang energy swirling around us, we need to be careful not to overheat and flare that Fire element too strongly. (Hence the midday rest recommendation, as well as advice about avoiding too much overstimulating screen time – remember, now it is the time for outdoor activities.) Spicy and heating foods, such as coffee and alcohol, are especially aggravating this time of year and, instead, diets that are filled with gently cooling and moistening foods are best. Chamomile, chrysanthemum, mint, and green tea are all wonderful beverage options. Drink them warm so as not to dampen your digestive fire, as you will need it to help process all those fresh fruits and vegetables, which are ideal.
Summer is a time of plenty, and TCM encourages us to soak in the sun’s rays, to laugh, dance and be merry with those we love. Summer is here, let’s celebrate!

In 2024 we say goodbye to the calm and community oriented Yin Water Rabbit and welcome the charismatic, generous, and slightly individualistic, Yang Wood Dragon. The Dragon is the luckiest animal in the Chinese zodiac and Dragon years are fortuitous for just about everyone.
The Chinese character for Dragon means ‘full awakening’ and is associated with the element Earth. Earth represents stability, honesty and loyalty. When combined with the element of Yang Wood - which brings energies of growth, creativity and flexibility - we are invited to fully awaken to the creative potential within us while simultaneously remaining firmly grounded in reality and our sense of what is right and just.
A year of innovative growth, 2024 is a good time to start new habits, projects, and routines as well as pursue visions and expand your horizons - but always with compassion, generosity of spirit, and a sense of staying true to your core beliefs. This is the year not just to dream, but to embody your dreams and bring them into reality. The Dragon is straightforward, clear, and decisive; and when its strength and groundedness is paired with the explosive energy of Yang Wood, we are provided with an opportunity to stretch and grow beyond our comfort zone while remaining firmly rooted in the here and now.
While 2023 was a time for gentle growth, 2024 provides us with the strength of a seed bursting forth with new life and transforming into a skyscraping redwood tree. The small plants we seeded in 2023 will receive the nourishment and spark of life they need, and 2024 will be a time to reap the fruits of last year’s labor.
Welcome Year of the Wood Dragon - with strength in our roots, we burst forth to greet you!
