Blessing for the Brokenhearted

“There is no remedy for love but to love more.”
—Henry David Thoreau

Let us agree
for now
that we will not say
the breaking
makes us stronger
or that it is better
to have this pain
than to have done
without this love.

Let us promise
we will not
tell ourselves
time will heal
the wound,
when every day
our waking
opens it anew.

Perhaps for now
it can be enough
to simply marvel
at the mystery
of how a heart
so broken
can go on beating,
as if it were made
for precisely this—

as if it knows
the only cure for love
is more of it,

as if it sees
the heart’s sole remedy
for breaking
is to love still,

as if it trusts
that its own
persistent pulse
is the rhythm
of a blessing
we cannot
begin to fathom
but will save us
nonetheless.

Wow, was writing this an edge! I am excited and grateful to finally share my first piece for , in which I share about my struggles with codependency and the ways yoga has empowered me with another choice (limitless possibilities, really). And, so much came up for me when shining a light on something so personal. Here’s what I learned in the process:

First challenge (draft #1): avistara (brevity)

Limiting something so vulnerable to 500 words or less—but, with my writing buddy as my witness, I did it!

Second challenge (draft #2): darshan (seeing and being seen)

Needing to dig deeper, rather than hiding behind yoga philosophy and theory, to actually let people into my story (eek, so uncomfortable! Especially to a Scorpio rising like me 🦂)

Third challenge (final draft): aparigraha (non-attachment)

Letting go of the outcome; surrendering all the other ways I could have tackled this tender topic; allowing done to be better than perfect; trusting

🙏 Thank you for the opportunity, along with your patience, wisdom, and support.

🧐 Take a closer look at my writing process over on Substack, where I share more about the evolution of this story—plus what I left out.

“Our work is to show we have been breathed upon—to show it, give it out, sing it out, to live out in the topside of the world what we have received through our sudden knowings, from body, from dreams and journeys of all sorts.” -Clarissa Pinkola Estes, Women Who Run with the Wolves

This season, I’ve been offering a lot of opportunities for my students of both writing and yoga to honor the darkness of this time of year by braving their own inner darkness—in community.

Earlier this month, I dedicated a whole mini-retreat to it: and I co-created a supportive container for writing and ritual that focused on Persephone’s descent into the underworld (where this sweet 35mm photo was snapped by 🥰).

All month long, Write Here, Write Now weekly writing group (online) has been exploring similar themes of embracing darkness and descent into our inner wilderness. Tonight is the last writing group of the month (since next Thursday is Thanksgiving), and you’re welcome even if this is your first time or you haven’t been able to make it to other sessions this month. (Thursday, December 4th marks a new month, which we’ll kick off with a 1.5-hour workshop around new monthly themes - mark your calendar!)

And, my weekly Sunday evening yoga 5 to 6:15pm at have been honoring the fierce Kālī Ma (swipe ➡️), queen of these deeper realms. Join me this weekend to integrate your weekend and reset for the holiday week ahead.

Let’s dive deep together:

PS Happy new moon (in Scorpio—my rising sign, in case you couldn’t tell from my love of exploring the depths). 🦂

I’ve been selected to volunteer at Disneyland for a special day that is both heart-warming and heart-breaking all at once.

If you know me, you know I was raised a Disney girl. I am so grateful for all the happy memories made during my annual trips to Disneyland with my family—a tradition that still lives on with my young niece and nephews. (My favorite part is watching my no-nonsense mom transform into a big kid, eager to transmit the joy she felt from her family trips as a child onto us.)

is a SoCal-based nonprofit that supports youth in foster care, from collecting donations for nice duffel bags and comfort items (typically, children have to tote their essentials in a garbage bag when being uprooted and traveling between foster care), as well as initiatives around the holidays—ways to make these children feel special, amidst the upheaval.

Did you know that 70% of siblings in foster care are placed separately from each other? In addition to being separated from their parents / primary caregivers, which is devastating enough, most are separated from their siblings as well.

In September, Foster Love will be reuniting siblings that have been separated at Disneyland, so that they can experience a day of joy alongside their involuntarily-estanged family members. It breaks my heart (open), which is why I am so honored to be a part of this special day.

But, to make “Disney Days” possible, we do need support. If it touches your heart too, please consider donating to make a difference for these sweet kiddos and making dreams come true.
