Anne fell in love with the philosophy of Chinese medicine as an anthropology student at UCLA. In 2004, she received her master’s degree in Traditional Oriental Medicine from Emperor’s College in Santa Monica. Anne’s interest in women’s health led her to Sydney, Australia, where she studied the integration of in vitro fertilization (IVF) and acupuncture with renowned author Jane Lyttleton. A year later she worked with Dr. Lifang Liang, author of "Acupuncture & IVF” and was part of one of the first onsite acupuncture programs for an IVF clinic at Pacific Fertility Center (PFC) in San Francisco. Anne also has advanced training in acupuncture orthopedics from Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Beverly Hills where she collaborated with many western doctors including neurologists, rheumatologists, radiologists and chiropractors. She is a Fellow of the American Board of Oriental Reproductive Medicine (FABORM) and a Diplomate of the National Board of Acupuncture Orthopedics (Dipl.NBAO). Anne’s practice is largely centered on couples that are trying to conceive. She sees many women with endocrine issues such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and helps support couples through the in vitro fertilization (IVF) process. She loves to take the time to listen to her patients and to explain the integration of Chinese medicine with western medicine. She also sees men and women for other complaints such as allergies, back and neck pain, digestive issues, stress and low immunity. Anne lives in San Francisco with her husband, Ben, and very busy toddler, Luca. Anne recently joined the Mama Lounge team to be closer to her family in the city. Previously she was in private practice at Balance Restored in Marin for nearly ten years.

I was in acupuncture school in 2002 when the landmark Paulus study was published and brought acupuncture for fertility into the mainstream. This study showed that acupuncture on embryo transfer day significantly increased pregnancy rates. This research, and the momentum behind fertility acupuncture, is a big reason why I chose to specialize in this area.

The research on acupuncture on IVF has come a long way in the last couple decades. Research has expanded from fresh cycles to include frozen cycles, donor cycles, and, very importantly, to more visits over the course of a few months rather than just acupuncture on transfer day alone.

It’s true that hormones can be more unpredictable during this time, but when we look outside the box of conventional medicine we can test estrogen and progesterone in a way that helps us understand symptoms.

While estrogen and progesterone get all the attention in the perimenopause chapter, they are only part of the story. I’m more interested in what influences those hormones and symptoms - things like thyroid health, nutrient status, metabolic health, and inflammation. These markers are frequently overlooked, yet they can have a huge impact on how you feel during this transition and guide your treatment plan.

This patient came to see me feeling exhausted and unsure what else to try after months of treatment. She still deeply wanted to become a parent, but needed a different approach.

We stepped back and looked at the full picture, running comprehensive labs to better understand her hormones and overall health, and created a personalized plan that included acupuncture and custom herbal support. The goal was not to push the body, but to gently restore balance and create the right environment for pregnancy.

Sometimes the body just needs foundational support and a nudge in the right direction.

🌿 Egg quality window - lifestyle factors 3-4 months before ovulation or egg retrieval can impact egg quality
🌿 Fertile window - the day of ovulation and up to 6 days before ovulation. Cervical mucus and s***m quality make a big difference during this time
🌿 Implantation window - the lining of the uterus, or endometrium, is receptive to a developing embryo, 6-12 days after ovulation.

Acupuncture, herbs and lifestyle all make a big difference for each one of these windows.

Hi! I’m Anne, the founder of Arrive Reproductive Medicine, an acupuncture and Functional Medicine practice in Santa Cruz dedicated to wacky periods, hormone balance, fertility and mom burnout. I’ve been in practice for over 20 years and I love helping women at all stages of hormone challenge and transition, even teens. As a business owner with two pre-teen boys, life is full and I love connecting with my patients on the crazy dance that is “work-life” balance.

The people I see the most in my practice are:
