CalABA Empower: February 8-10, 2024. Applied behavior analysis (ABA) has been well established as an empirically validated intervention for autistic individuals which has led to funding for this intervention across a variety of payers such as insurance carriers, school districts, and state funded entities. Practitioners are now more likely to engage with a larger variety of funders, yet how best to navigate these complex relationships is a skill for which many clinicians have lacked training. This lack of experience or training may result in undesired consequences that can negatively impact the field of ABA. The current panel seeks to guide providers on how best to navigate relationships with funders in a positive manner while protecting the integrity of ABA. Panelists will share experiences and recommendations from a variety of perspectives including a clinical, organization, and public policy perspective. Panelists will share lessons learned, describe problem prevention and resolution, and steps a provider could take to remedy any challenges that have had adverse effects on service delivery or consumer outcomes, all while focusing on collaboration with the funder. The rights and responsibilities of the provider when navigating funder relations will also be discussed.
