Fall is related to the Metal element and the organs associated with Metal are the lungs and large intestines. This might be a time of year that you notice things happening with these organs specifically; the lungs are in charge of the immune system in Chinese medicine and we all know this is when the lungs can be affected by common colds and flu bugs. Here are my favorite tips to take care of your immune system for this reason. (And obviously, acupuncture is my number one tip for boosting the immune system!)
Besides acupuncture, I suggest trying a saline + xylitol nasal spray as well as an antiviral/antibacterial mouthwash daily at the end of the day to kill any viruses you might have inhaled. This has kept me healthy as my kids bring home germs and cough them in my face over the past month since school has started (🙄). If you feel like you are really fighting something, I suggest the following: lots of water, no sugar (including fruits/juices), extra garlic, Vitamin C, Vitamin D and any herbal immune supplementation you might like (Echinacea, Gan Mao Ling, On Guard/Thieves Oil, colloidal silver, etc.).
And speaking of Vitamin D, this is the time of year all of us should be taking Vitamin D daily as we don’t produce enough naturally this time of year in northern California. I suggest Vit D daily October – April, depending on how much sunlight you are exposed to. Most insurances will cover a Vit D test if you want to go to your MD and get a blood panel done to see if you are deficient in Vit D (most Americans are). Vit D is great for the immune system and bone health as well as a preventative for many diseases including cancer, heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, etc. It is also a mood booster so it is critical for those of us who might get a little bluesy with the seasonal shift.
