We are drawn to what we KNOW. Whether it serves us or not, we feel comfortable in the known and often will turn away from the unknown (even if it could help).

What I love about this testimonial from a student is that it aligns so beautifully with the neuroplasticity of Hanna Somatics.

We might encounter movements that feel foreign, make no sense to us, don't feel like our natural way of doing things, or we just can't figure out. As we work with them though, our experience of them begins to change. Whether we notice it right away or not, we are learning and changing with these movements. And when we return to moving about, our experience in the world changes too.

For those of us in winter climates right now, getting on the floor to practice Hanna Somatics might have an extra hurdle. Feeling too cold to practice today? Here are a few tips to make it cozy.

✅ Use a cozy blanket underneath you. You can even have a light blanket on top of you as you practice as long as the blanket doesn’t get in the way.

✅ My favorite on very cold days is to use a massage table warmer underneath me. I know it is an extra expense, so I totally get that it might not work for everyone, but if you are very dedicated to your practice, and run cold, it could be a helpful addition.

Stay tuned for more tips to support your at-home practice.

At-Home Practice Tip 3: Slip & Grip

There are times in Hanna Somatics where the ability to slide on your mat is helpful and there are also times where you want firm support underneath you. I find that having a mat that has some texture, but is not sticky is helpful.

If you only have a sticky mat, try putting a blanket with some texture on top so you have the options of a bit of slide when you want to move a limb or your torso with only moderate resistance. Play with options as you get to know the practice and find what works best for you.

I am so grateful for these moments with a client when they realize how far they have come. Even if they are still working towards a greater goal, to recognize the improvements that they have gained so far is incredibly important.

It means so much to be able to share Hanna Somatics and Pain Reprocessing Therapy with clients and students. I find it especially heartening in this challenging time that we live in. To share with, collaborate with, and learn from other somas nourishes me.

At-Home Practice Tip 2: Comfort is Key

Support yourself! If you are not comfortable, you probably won’t want to continue your at-home practice. Possibly even more important, your nervous system will be less inclined to let go. Set up with a soft enough mat(s) to make your time on the floor feel good.

You don’t have to purchase special equipment, if you don’t have mats, try folded blankets. You can even do most Hanna Somatic movement on a firm mattress if you don’t have floor space, or are not comfortable getting on the floor.

Ready to start practicing Hanna Somatics at home?

✨Tip 1: Make room for your Kinesphere 🌐
Have a space that allows you to reach out around your body. Hanna Somatic movements explore all directions around you, so having a mat or blanket that supports your whole kinesphere will make it more comfortable to move around.
