I often hear people say that they need to strengthen their—insert body part—because their pain is due to weak muscles.

➡️ What most people don’t realize is that weak muscles are not directly related to muscle mass.

💪You can have tons of muscle mass and still feel weak because your muscles are holding onto tension all of the time.

You can also have very little muscle mass and feel very strong because your muscles are not holding onto tension, they have their full energy potential and ability to coordinate.

In an ideal scenario, your muscles would be able to contract from 0 to 100% or anywhere in between with ease. In reality most of us are constantly holding onto tension in our muscles so they are constantly working (and burning energy) at 10%, 20% or even more every -moment-of-the-day.

🐥Imagine if you had to stand and hold a baby chick in your hand for an entire day. The first 30 minutes might not be that bad, the chick is light (and cute), but after the first hour you might start to feel tired. Now imagine how you would feel after 24 hours of holding your arm in the same position to support the chick.

When our muscles are exhausted from holding onto unconscious tension, they can’t perform as well, and if we have been holding onto this tension for 10 years…well that might lead us to feeling weak when performing basic tasks.

In Hanna Somatics we work to release tension so that you can move better, feel better, and feel STRONGER. It isn’t about building muscle, it is about allowing your existing muscles to actually perform.

After years of pain in my hands, wrists, and forearms as a massage therapist I found Hanna Somatics. The tools that I will share in the Hands to Heart series are ones that I use frequently to keep me feeling good and remaining active.

When we release something within our soma, whether it's physical, mental, or emotional, it can begin to inspire more release through our soma. If our somatic tensions are interwoven, our somatic releases can also unfurl together as we loosen one thread.

What I love about this is that in a Hanna Somatics session or class we may have expectations of what needs will be met AND there may be so much more woven together beyond our awareness. You don't need to know it is there in order for it to begin releasing.

Whether you are looking for support with something physical, mental, emotional, or energetic, Hanna Somatics can support you with slow, gentle, mindful movement.

I was so touched when a student shared this with me after class this week. ✨

In Hanna Somatics classes I invite students to bring their awareness inward, to be with themselves as they are moving and exploring. This often brings them into quiet, exploring the subtleties of the movements and I trust that they are taking care of themselves as our dialogue drops off.

It usually isn't until class ends that I get a sense of what they learned, how they felt, or what they want to know more about. This latest share is definitely one that I am grateful for, and made my day.

Having worked in the massage therapy profession for over 10 years, I struggled with pain in my fingers, thumbs, wrists, forearms, and shoulders frequently. I found Hanna Somatics towards the end of my massage career and it was a game-changer in helping my hands, arms, and shoulders recover from the stress of the job and stay healthy and strong. And massage therapists are only one of many groups of people who will benefit from this work!

The Hands to Heart class series is designed for anyone experiencing pain, weakness, coordination issues, arthritis, carpal tunnel, or other issues in their hands, arms, and shoulders. Whether you spend hours at a computer, knit, play an instrument, build small-scale models, or any number of other professions, athletics, or hobbies that use your hands—this Hanna Somatics series is for you.

You can find out more about this series here: https://buddinglotusbody.com/hanna-somatic-education/workshops/ and feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions.

This is definitely a go-to movement for me to release tension and pain in my hands, wrists, and forearms. The keys to getting the full benefit are:

🐌Move slowly

🥰Move within comfort

🤓Be curious about your movement

Whether you work at a computer, make jewelry, are an artist, or a surgeon—if you have tension and pain in your hands and wrists, try this out and let me know how it goes.

If you want to learn more helpful ways to ease your hands, wrists, arms, and shoulder join me for my upcoming series on March 25. All the details are in the link in my bio.

Sage loves Hanna Somatics and she is a pretty amazing movement coach. She has even attended some 1:1 sessions in the past and begrudgingly shares the heated table warmer with clients ☺️

I have lost track of how many students say after class "I can't believe how much better I feel, we didn't really do a lot!".

Hanna Somatics can be a subtle practice, but the results are not and that is why I love sharing it. Today, as I was leaving class one of the students shared more than once, how different her walking felt and she was really encouraged by it.

This is a practice that can offer support to so many, and I am truly excited to share it with as many people as I can.

Whether you live in Santa Fe or anywhere in the world, I would be happy to work with you. Reach out if you have questions, or visit buddinglotusbody.com/hanna-somatic-education/somatics-sessions/ for more details about Hanna Somatic Education.

Societally, we are in a “fix me” culture. As someone who was a massage therapist for over 10 year, I know how appealing it is to have a practitioner, doctor, or pill be our solution to pain and movement limitations.

Current pain science discoveries do not support these “fixes” in most cases. In the majority of people experience chronic pain, the pain has been learned, limitations have been learned, and the solution is to unlearn our habits.

This is where Hanna Somatics and Pain Reprocessing Therapy come in. We can address pain from both a gentle movement and mindfulness approach by working with your nervous system to unlearn your patterns, and learn new ways of being in this human world that serve you better.

If you are ready to actively participate in your healing, and are curious about how to start. Reach out to me. I would be happy to chat about how Hanna Somatics and Pain Reprocessing Therapy can support you.
