Sensory needs are not misbehavior. When a child covers their ears, avoids eye contact, seeks deep pressure, or chews on objects, they are communicating something important about how their nervous system is experiencing the world. These behaviors are not defiance they are regulation strategies. Overwhelm, discomfort, and sensory overload can make everyday situations feel intense, and children respond the best way their brain knows how. When adults understand these signals and meet sensory needs with compassion instead of punishment, challenging behaviors decrease and children feel safer, calmer, and more connected. Understanding their sensory world is the first step toward supporting their emotional wellbeing.
