Life can be seen as a quest for balance: balance within oneself, balance with one's environment, balance with nature. The five elements of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) are always in harmony with one another, guiding us toward a model of health that is practical and powerful. This is why I've chosen to devote my life to learning those ancient healing techniques which strive to engender balance in my clients. Currently I am enrolled in the Masters of Science in Traditional Oriental Medicine (MSTOM) program at the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in Chicago, working towards a degree that will allow me to practice acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. My introduction to studying medicinal herbs came from the western perspective with Jim McDonald's Four Season Herbal Intensive course in Michigan, and with Paul Bergner and Sevensong at the Global Health Course hosted by Natural Doctors International in Nicaragua. I also have some prior experience with the Chinese channel system through my certification program in Zen Shiatsu, a Japanese form of massage that uses the same points, meridians and foundational teachings as TCM. I look forward to bringing together all facets of my education along with my life experiences and unique perspective to be able to serve my clients health needs in whatever way possible.

The dragon is considered a lucky sign and is a sign associated with wealth, power, courage, wisdom, enthusiasm, and respect. Dragons maintain standards of excellence, confidently strive for success, and are filled with energy. Dragons are often leaders and are charismatic. Dragons often aspire to greatness, often through perseverance.

The wood element imparts the powers of growth and springtime. In traditional Chinese medicine, wood is associated with the 12–14 primary acupuncture channels, green, wind, sour, east, eyes, tendons, and tears. If there is a blockage in the flow of qi via the wood element, there is irritability, anger, and shouting. The associated zang-fu organs are the liver and gallbladder. The wood dragon is an excellent year for planting something new—a time for new beginnings.

It’s interesting to take a look at widely held cultural beliefs about medicine and examine them. A lot of people think that at the first sign of a cold or flu you should jump right into a sauna to “sweat it out”. According to Dr. Melina Ring of Northwestern Medicine, in this article from the N...

Ruta graveolens, commonly known as rue, the herb-of-grace:

Domesticated Rue has fallen out of use in today’s cooking primarily because our taste preferences and choices have changed. In the past, the use of an herb that imparted a bitter undertone to a dish, balancing the sweet, sour, salty, and hot flavors was important, but it is less so today. In today’s world culinary selections are endless therefore what was commonly used in the past can be replaced with tastes more individually suited to a palate. Occasionally you’ll still find Rue used in Italian dishes, mostly among Old Italian families that have passed down recipes through generations of cooks.

It’s most commonly used today in Ethiopia as both a cooking herb and an addition to coffee. Both the leaf and the seed, are an important addition to brewing a pot of traditional Ethiopian coffee.

Rue leaf was the model for the Suit of Clubs in playing cards. Why would the Rue leaf be honored with such a position on playing cards? Surely it's because in earlier times Rue was so recognized as powerful medicine that it also acquired renown for its magical properties. It was used as a defense against witches. Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci are said to have eaten rue to enhance their creativity and eyesight. Rue symbolized regret, sorrow and repentance, and Catholics put sprigs of it in holy water sprinkled on worshippers.

The parts that grow above the ground and the oil are used to make medicine.

People use rue for conditions such as menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea), anxiety, headache, and many others.

I believe in the healer as mediator between the human community and the greater ecological matrix. The classics of Chinese medicine provide the framework for how these two fields interrelate. The timelessness of their teachings mean that they can be applied to modern people with modern problems in an effective and safe manner. I use the Sa’am method of acupuncture, a five-element based system from Korea that has been passed on through an oral lineage and is now finding wider use in the United States. I prescribe herbal formulas based on the writing of Zhang Zhongjing, a physician from the 2nd and 3rd centuries whose work was foundational for the next two millennia of Chinese herbal medicine. It is an honor to present these offerings in a clinical setting.
