Step #6- Monitor your sight with an Amsler Grid
This simple, daily routine takes less than one minute and can help people with AMD save more of their vision. Using this grid is essential to finding any vision changes that are not obvious, so you can report them to your ophthalmologist. https://www.aao.org/eye-health/tips-prevention/facts-about-amsler-grid-daily-vision-test

Step #4- Take the right kind of vitamins
Vitamins can delay progression of advanced AMD and help people keep their vision longer if they have intermediate AMD or advanced AMD in one eye. But make sure it’s the right combination of vitamins. A recent study found that some of the top-selling products do not contain identical ingredient dosages to eye vitamin formulas proven effective in clinical trials.

👀February is Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) Awareness month. For the next week, we will be sharing The American Academy of Ophthalmology's 7 steps for better eye health and to reduce your risk of AMD. AMD is one of the leading causes of vision loss in people over the age of 50. 👁️
Step #1 - Get regular comprehensive eye exams
AMD often has no early warning signs, so getting regular comprehensive eye exams
is critical to diagnosing and treating the disease early. If you have no signs or risk
factors for eye disease, the Academy recommends a baseline screening at age 40,
then every one to two years after age 65.

What is laser-assisted cataract surgery—and is it right for you?

At Shepard Eye Center, we often recommend laser-assisted surgery for cataract patients who want the most precise and modern option available.

We use a femtosecond laser, which gently creates the incisions, opens the cataract, and starts to break it up before the surgeon steps in. That added precision helps make the procedure even safer and more comfortable.

If you're exploring cataract surgery, we’re happy to walk you through your options and help you choose what’s best for your eyes.

Wondering how cataracts are removed?
It’s simpler than you might think.

Cataract surgery is a quick, outpatient procedure—usually about 10 minutes. There are no needles, no stitches, no patches, and no pain. Patients are lightly sedated, the eye is numbed with just drops, and a tiny incision is made (you won’t feel it!).

We gently remove the cloudy lens—the cataract—and replace it with a new, clear lens that restores focus and sharpness. Afterward, most patients just head home wearing a pair of sunglasses.

It’s a life-changing procedure that’s smoother than most people expect.

Did you know you have choices when it comes to cataract surgery?

Today’s cataract procedures offer more than just clear vision—they offer the best vision possible, depending on your needs.

While there’s a standard lens that can restore your sight to how it was before, many patients are great candidates for upgraded lenses that correct astigmatism, nearsightedness, farsightedness—or even both. These premium lenses can reduce or even eliminate the need for glasses after surgery.

When you come in for cataract surgery, we’ll talk through all your options and help you choose the one that fits your lifestyle best.
