Edith Sullwold Memorial Lecture
“Afraid of Things That Are in Flight:
Birds, and Sometimes Families”
October 7 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Zoom Only; Prepaid Cost: $50.00 – $70.00
Presented by Rob Tyminski, DMH, author of The Psychological Effects of Immigrating: How does immigration affect the mental health of children whose parents have moved to another country? A desire to offer their children better lives is often a main motivating factor for many immigrant parents. Children can come to symbolize parents’ wishes for this promising future, a bit like stars in the night sky shining out of the darkness. Yet sometimes, parents bring with them remnants of their past that linger within a family as secrets and untold stories, such as of traumatic events before or during their migration. Attendees will be encouraged to engage in discussion about their perspectives on the psychological effects of immigration.

PLAY // Von Franz reflects on the place and role of play in the evolution of human consciousness. Comparing human to the rest of the animal queendom, she explains how infant animals play much more as do adult ones, who are “much too harassed by the worries of survival.” Zoo animals too play much, much longer and more frequent than animals in the wild, she writes. Von Franz completes Jung’s theory here on the origin of the evolution of human consciousness being rooted in an “overplus of instinctual energy” that we no longer use for survival.

“Play is certainly the beginning of all spiritual and civilizing conscious occupations. This is not Jung‘s idea but my own guess: that the prehistoric geometrical lines and scratchings we have found—which are even older than the cave paintings—were put there by a rhythmical movement or banging which probably was some kind of playful amusement. This would mean the people dwelling
in those caves felt relatively safe from attack by other animals. Since they had fire, they could light their cave and if they weren‘t too tired after hunting all day, perhaps on winter nights, they sat together. What did they do? They began to bump against the cave walls and to make lines or rhythmically scratch patterns. Then slowly, they began fantasizing into these etchings, and there finally emerged those famous Paleolithic cave paintings. So you could say those marks represent a more consistent or continuous form of awareness, the beginnings of consciousness.”

— Marie-Louise von Franz in Archetypal Patterns in Fairytales, p. 40-41.

I would add that this rhythmic play could have also been a state of trance and dance, a primordial shamanic kinship between worlds and to the more-than-human world to which primordial wo/man had an entangled relationship. In this view, play and worship become intimately interlinked in the evolution of human consciousness.

Unit Three of our Jungian Sandplay Training Program (Jungian Sandplay With Children) will begin on Saturday, April 29th! ♥️😄🧠
Seminars will be on Zoom only, once a month on a Saturday from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm with half-hour break for lunch.

04/29: Working with Children from a Jungian Perspective, presented by Audrey Punnett
05/20: Treating Trauma and Anxiety in Children with Jungian Sandplay, presented by Elizabeth Schofield-Bickford and Sachiko Reece
06/24: Complex Clinical Issues, presented by Maria Ellen Chiaia

This is a comprehensive, two-year training program, taught by Jungian analysts and designed to promote the study and practice of sandplay therapy. It includes an introduction, history, and practical guidelines for sandplay therapy, as well as the application of Jungian theory, the study of archetypal and symbolic material found in dreams, mythology, and fairytales, and the movement of libido as it appears in sandplay scenes to express the individuation process. Seminars incorporate case material of children and adults to amplify and highlight theoretical underpinnings. Completion of the program meets all coursework requirements for Sandplay Therapists of America (STA) and International Society for Sandplay Therapy (ISST).

The training curriculum is organized into six areas of study that are designed to sequentially deepen the participant’s understanding and use of Jungian sandplay. Each unit contains three 6-hour seminars taught by Jungian analysts who are also certified sandplay therapist-teachers.
