Resharing an article I wrote for the ASHA Leader in 2017 titled: Climbing Out of Limbic. In a day and age where children and their families have more stress than ever, getting kids out of their limbic systems ("fight, flight, or freeze" mode) and into their prefrontal cortex is a gateway to better functioning and a better life. This article shares methods parents and professionals alike can integrate to help kids move from a mode of surviving to a world of thriving in our "new normal."
When anxiety takes hold, children default to their brain’s fear-focused limbic system. And learning stops short.
