New research in PNAS Nexus highlights a critical link between the oral microbiome and Alzheimer’s risk.

Discussing these findings, PNI’s Dr. Jennifer Bramen, Director of Neuroimaging, notes that while certain oral bacteria are linked to cognitive decline, others actually support memory.

The Key Takeaways:

The Connection: Higher levels of "good" bacteria (Neisseria and Haemophilus) correlate with better attention and memory retention.

The Action Plan: Dr. Bramen recommends a diet rich in nitrate-heavy vegetables to suppress harmful pathogens and support brain health.

New data from CREST-2 show that for people with severe carotid artery narrowing but no recent stroke symptoms, adding a minimally invasive stent procedure to intensive medical therapy cut stroke risk by more than half compared with medical therapy alone.

Over four years, just 2.8% of patients who received stenting + medical care experienced a stroke — versus 6.0% of those on medical treatment alone.

The results are being hailed as a milestone for stroke prevention, offering new hope for patients at high risk of carotid stenosis and strengthening the case for stenting under the right conditions.

Precision in the operating room comes from more than surgical skill.

In this PNI Minute from the Quantum Leadership Podcast, Daniel F. Kelly, MD, reflects on how great surgeons balance courage with careful decision-making—respecting anatomy, knowing limits, and centering each patient’s needs.

This clip is part of a larger conversation with host Dr. Stephen Sideroff about leadership under pressure—from building a groundbreaking neuroscience institute to performing high-stakes brain tumor surgery where every millimeter matters.

An 81-year-old Alzheimer’s patient recently completed a nearly 3,000-mile walk from California to Florida — a remarkable achievement that reflects years of support from Pacific Neuroscience Institute.

After her diagnosis, she began working with Dr. Dale Bredesen, whose individualized brain-health program focused on nutrition, movement, sleep, and targeted interventions to help slow cognitive decline and improve daily function.

Her cross-country finish serves as a meaningful reminder that Alzheimer’s care can promote strength, purpose, and quality of life. It highlights the ongoing need for research-driven approaches that help patients continue doing what they love.

Meningiomas are the most common primary brain tumor, and in many cases, individuals are unaware they have one until symptoms appear.

In this PNI Minute, Nouzhan Sehati, MD, explains that most meningiomas are slow-growing and benign. Because they originate from the protective layers surrounding the brain—not the brain tissue itself—surgical removal can often relieve pressure and support meaningful recovery.

Understanding diagnosis and treatment options helps patients and families make informed decisions with confidence.

Research presented back in April this year at the American Academy of Neurology’s 77th Annual Meeting found that individuals who engage in moderate to vigorous daily activity are up to 40% less likely to develop dementia, depression, stroke, anxiety, or sleep disorders than those who are more sedentary.

Dr. David A. Merrill, geriatric psychiatrist and Singleton Endowed Chair in Integrative Brain Health at Pacific Neuroscience Institute, told Medical News Today:

“Even moderate levels of physical activity are linked to a lower risk of multiple neuropsychiatric conditions—from dementia to depression—highlighting just how powerful movement is for protecting the brain.”

These findings reinforce the link between physical activity and brain health, showing the importance of movement as a preventive tool across all ages. Click the link below to read the full article.

“Dr. Putnam is very patient, provides clear explanations and answers to questions, and makes one feel very comfortable. I feel that Dr. Putnam is a very caring doctor, which seems rare these days.”

We’re thankful for Dr. Putman’s steady presence and commitment to patient-centered care.
