Rachel Negar Partiali, Ph.D.

Rachel Negar Partiali, Ph.D. Hello! I'm a licensed clinical psychologist in Santa Monica, CA. I treat adolescents, adults, and couples doing insight oriented therapy.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist (PSY25775) in private practice in Santa Monica, CA. I received my Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) from UCLA, where I majored in Psychology. I later earned a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Clinical Psychology and a Doctor of Philosophy in Clinical Psychology (Ph.D.) from the California School of Professional Psychology (CSPP). I work with adolescents, young adults, adults, and couples incorporating both psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral approaches. As an artist and psychologist, I also use art modalities in my work as needed. In addition to working in private practice, I have been a staff psychologist at UCLA Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), where I provided psychotherapy to the UCLA student population, addressing issues interfering with motivation, academic performance, and adjustment into adulthood. My philosophy is that psychological pain is a great guide in understanding our internal world, rather than something that must be eradicated. I believe that our symptoms push us forward in our healing journey, and are what drives us into therapy. However, my holistic framework views each individual as more than just a constellation of symptoms. I work with a wide range of individuals, and particularly enjoy working with people who have experienced mood and anxiety disorders, sexual trauma, eating disorders/body image concerns, relational concerns, LGBTQ issues, issues related to emerging adulthood and life transitions, and acculturation concerns. If you would like to set up a consultation appointment, please contact me at (310) 773-0037.

Happy International Women’s Day! May we honor all women around the world, especially those who are still held in captivity and those who are suffering in any way.

Everyone is somehow being impacted by the violence and terror in the world right now. Sometimes the current trauma can trigger wounds of the past that are wanting to be seen and healed. I encourage all of us to feel whatever pain is coming up and to channel it in a way that can bring light for the whole world. This is a piece I wrote called, “Memories.” Praying for peace in our world.

Memories

Sitting in this room, the silence of the neighborhood feels deafening like the screams of all those innocent people.
Hollow, unheard, but forever stamped in the records of time.
The world has stopped and it’s simultaneously rapidly moving.
The fan, swirling the thick air filled with the aroma of Persian food, fear, and fluttering memories of a past that has not been forgotten, but is being re-lived.
Walking through that airport in Iran at the age of four and a half, escaping a war-torn country
Getting ready to be teleported into another dimension and leaving behind the only home I’ve known
Like a bird setting flight as the nest is torn away by the violent winds crashing and destroying anything in its place.
Walking through the tunnel of fluorescent lights and men in uniform, my wobbly legs, the ones that had not fully learned to ground herself in her native dwelling, were about to take a leap into the foreign land of the West.
The swirling fan, both dizzying and dazzling as I stare into its monotonous dance…
Similar to that of a swirling Dervish, drunken on the oneness of all, being lost in creation, while also participating in the formation of life.

We may not always fully understand why we feel hurt in a situation. The more we can become clear about what triggered us, the better we can self-soothe and/or reach out for support

“When faced with difficult emotions from our partners, we have three choices: To turn towards them, against, or away. The first choice builds trust and emotional connection; the latter two disconnect a couple and can lead to escalating conflict....Attunement is listening with compassion to your partner’s hurt. When a partner listens with an open heart, tenderness, and care, the upset partner feels accepted, safe, and loved. Even more importantly, this behavior builds trust, the backbone of intimacy.”

Why can’t everyone just be happy?
