Devastating news about a member of our community. Ashley was a fighter. A joy to have in class. Her spirit was insatiable. We will miss her. Sending her family and loved ones deep love.

It is with deep sadness that we share the news that our friend and fellow lung cancer advocate, Ashley Vassallo, has passed away.

Many of you know Ashley’s extraordinary story. After experiencing subtle breathing issues in 2022, she spent 366 days fighting for an accurate diagnosis, repeatedly misdiagnosed despite her own background as a hospice social worker. Only after a pulmonary embolism brought her to the ER did she finally learn the truth: stage 4 non-small cell lung cancer, already spread to her spine.

From that moment on, Ashley refused to be dismissed. When a promised surgery was abruptly withdrawn, she researched tirelessly until she found a California surgeon willing to perform the life-changing pneumonectomy that gave her more time with her family. Even as complications and recurrence followed, her determination never wavered.

Ashley turned her experience into advocacy that resonated across the lung cancer community. As , she utilized her medical expertise and raw honesty to educate others about early detection, treatment options, and the importance of self-advocacy. Her authenticity made countless patients feel seen, supported, and empowered.

Ashley’s passing is a tremendous loss. Her legacy lives on in every patient she inspired to speak up, every caregiver she encouraged, and every moment of courage she sparked.
