๐Ÿ“š This visual represents what many students with dyslexia experience. A cycle where reading challenges lead to frustration, pressure, avoidance, and decreased confidence, which then makes learning feel even harder. What may look like lack of effort is often a child caught in a loop of overwhelm and discouragement. Without the right support, this cycle can continue to build over time. Early identification and targeted intervention are key to breaking that pattern and helping children regain confidence and success in their learning.

๐Ÿ“– A large number of children are moving through school without the reading skills they need to succeed. For these students, reading can feel slow, frustrating, and overwhelmingโ€”impacting not only academics, but confidence and motivation. Many are trying their best, yet still falling behind because their needs are not being fully identified or supported. When reading struggles go unaddressed, the gap continues to grow.
If your child is struggling with reading, itโ€™s important to take action early. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Swain to better understand whatโ€™s going on and how to support your childโ€™s success. (707) 575-1468

โœ๏ธ When a child is having difficulty learning to read, itโ€™s not about effortโ€”itโ€™s about approach. Many children need instruction that is clear, systematic, and tailored to how their brain processes language. Structured, explicit instruction changes everything, giving children the tools they need to understand sounds, connect them to letters, and build reading skills with confidence. With the right support, progress becomes possible and frustration begins to fade.
If your child is struggling with reading, donโ€™t wait and hope it improves on its own. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Swain to learn how the right approach can make all the difference.

๐Ÿ“ Many children with dyslexia show signs early on, but those signs are often missed or misunderstood. When reading difficulties go unrecognized, children can spend years feeling frustrated, falling behind, or questioning their abilities. Early identification changes that path. With the right support, children can build strong reading skills, gain confidence, and begin to experience success in the classroom. Dyslexia doesnโ€™t define a childโ€™s potentialโ€”but how early we respond can shape their journey.
If something doesnโ€™t feel right, donโ€™t wait. The earlier you act, the greater the impactโ€”schedule a consultation with Dr. Swain today and start getting answers. (707) 575-1468

๐Ÿ“ Some children who struggle in school arenโ€™t lacking abilityโ€”they have curious minds, creative thinking, and a natural drive to explore. But traditional classrooms often prioritize structure, focus, and following directions, which can make these strengths look like distractions instead of potential. Over time, this disconnect can impact a childโ€™s confidence and how they see themselves as a learner. Sometimes, itโ€™s not that something is wrong with the childโ€”itโ€™s that their needs arenโ€™t being fully understood.
If your child is struggling and you feel like something is being missed, trust that instinct. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Swain to better understand how your child learns and how to support their success. (707) 575-1468

โ€ข
๐Ÿงธ When a child says, โ€œWill you play with me?โ€โ€”itโ€™s not just about passing time. Itโ€™s communication.
Research shows that warm, responsive interactions between children and caregivers trigger the release of oxytocin, often called the โ€œbonding hormone.โ€ This supports emotional security, trust, and attachment (Feldman, 2012; Carter, 2014).
When children play with peersโ€”especially through cooperative, imaginative, or active playโ€”the brain also releases dopamine and serotonin, chemicals linked to motivation, reward, mood regulation, and social satisfaction (Panksepp, 2007; Siviy & Panksepp, 2011). These experiences help children practice problem-solving, flexibility, and social understanding in real time.
But hereโ€™s what often goes unseen:
Children donโ€™t always have the language to say, โ€œI feel overwhelmed,โ€ or โ€œI need connection to regulate.โ€
Instead, they show you.
Through play.
Play is how children organize their thoughts, process emotions, and make sense of their world. Itโ€™s not separate from learningโ€”it is learning. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics emphasizes that play supports healthy brain development, builds executive functioning skills, and strengthens relationships (AAP, 2018).
So when your child keeps asking you to play, it may be their way of seeking regulation, connection, or understandingโ€”not just entertainment.

๐Ÿง ๐Ÿงธ What might your child be trying to work through when they invite you into their play?

๐Ÿ“š For some children, learning to read isnโ€™t just challengingโ€”itโ€™s confusing at its core.
The sounds in words donโ€™t always come through clearly. They can feel jumbled, too fast, or hard to hold onto long enough to make sense of them. What should feel like simple stepsโ€”hearing a sound, connecting it to a letter, blending it into a wordโ€”can feel like trying to piece together something that never quite stays still.
So while it may look like hesitation, avoidance, or lack of focusโ€ฆ
whatโ€™s often happening is much deeper.
Theyโ€™re working harder than we can see.
Repeating things in their head.
Trying to keep up with information that doesnโ€™t feel consistent or clear.
And over time, that kind of effortโ€”without the right supportโ€”can turn into frustration, self-doubt, and even a belief that theyโ€™re just โ€œnot good at it.โ€
But this isnโ€™t about trying harder.
Itโ€™s about understanding how they process soundโ€”and giving them the tools that actually match how their brain learns.
If this sounds like your child, itโ€™s worth taking a closer look.
The right support can change not just how they learnโ€ฆ but how they feel about learning. (707) 575-1468.

๐ŸŒ† Before we jump into creating our block city, we slow things down and build it in our minds first.

Using magnet boards and different community scenes, our group explores what a city has, what people do, and how everything connects. From schools to stores to parks, they begin to create a shared understanding they can carry into play.

This step helps turn ideas into action, supports flexible thinking, and sets the stage for collaborative play.

Because when kids can picture itโ€ฆ they can build it.

๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ‘‚ For some children, the challenge isnโ€™t just learning to readโ€”it begins with how their brain processes sound. Dyslexia and auditory processing difficulties can overlap, making it harder to distinguish sounds, connect them to letters, and keep up in the classroom. These are bright, capable children who may be working twice as hard just to keep up. When we understand whatโ€™s happening beneath the surface, we can provide the right support to help them succeed with confidence.
