Sign the petition to get the pesticides, heavy metals, PFAS and plastic out of school lunches and the organic food in! Pass S.5084, the Safe School Meals Act of 2024: Petition link: tinyurl.com/SafeSchoolMealsAct

Thanks, in part, to the voices of our CA supporters, we had a major victory last month with the passage of AB-2316, the California School Food Safety Act, a first-in-the-nation bill that bans toxic food dyes from school meals in the state. Now, we have the opportunity to do that AND MORE for the entire country.

The Safe School Meals Act of 2024, S.5084, introduced by Sen. Cory Booker is legislation that benefits not just kids, but ALL Americans. The bill, if enacted into law, would effectively ban heavy metals, synthetic food dyes, and glyphosate, paraquat, and organophosphate pesticide residues in school meals; ban PFAS forever chemicals, phthalates, lead, and bisphenols in school food packaging, and support organic agriculture.

Currently, over 40% of America’s children suffer from chronic illness. That’s not a statistic we can live with. Increasing evidence connects the increasing disease to diet. We can help to reverse this heartbreaking trend with S.5084.

By supporting this bill, we’re not just advocating for healthier school meals, we’re investing in a healthier future for everyone. Imagine a society where the food we eat promotes well-being, reduces healthcare costs, and supports sustainable farming—this is a cause that unites generations.

Sonoma County - If you haven't voted yet, I would like to suggest Steve Schwartz for State Assembly, 12th District. He's a local farmer who was very supportive of our 2016 Measure M to prevent growing GMOs. Steve was the Founding Executive Director of The Interfaith Sustainable Food Collaborative. The son of an immigrant, Steve Schwartz's dedication to the community and public service runs deep. Steve climbed to the rank of Eagle Scout, served in the Peace Corps, was a graduate fellow at the US Environmental Protection Agency, and was Chief of Staff to two California Assemblymembers. Schwartz, 56 years old, has more than 25 years of experience leading non-profit organizations that have had local, state, and national impacts. Please mark your ballot for Steve Schwartz.

In 2018 the Trump administration overturned a ban on neonicotinoid insecticides on wild refuges. Neonics are considerably more toxic than many other pesticides and are deadly for bees and birds. Tell your representatives to support a bill to reinstate the ban NOW!

linking Roundup weedkiller to a man's non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Bayer said it was "a step in the right direction" after the court significantly reduced damages.

A California appeals court on Monday reduced the amount of damages German agrochemical company Bayer would pay to a school groundkeeper but stopped short of overturning a verdict that linked glyphosate-based Roundup weedkiller to the man's deadly form of cancer.

The court reduced damages to $20.5 million (€18 million), a fraction of the initial $289-million payout a San Francisco jury awarded Dewayne Johnson, the plaintiff, in 2018.

Johnson, who worked as a groundkeeper at a school near San Francisco, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2012, two years after starting his job. He often sprayed hundreds of gallons of Roundup on school grounds each year.

He filed a lawsuit against Monsanto two years after being unable to work due to the disease. Bayer assumed responsibility for the case after it bought up Monsanto for a record-breaking sum for a German firm.

'Abundant' evidence

In 2018, a jury ruled that Monsanto "acted with malice and oppression" by failing to acknowledge glyphosate as a cancer-causing agent. At the time, the jury ordered Monsanto to pay $289 million in damages but a judge later slashed the payout to $78 million.

Although Bayer said Monday's verdict was "a step in the right direction," it did not exclude the possibility of pursuing an appeal at the California Supreme Court. Bayer has consistently denied that glyphosate is a cancer-causing agent.

However, the California appeals court said Johnson had provided "abundant" evidence to show that people exposed to glyphosate in considerable quantities were at a higher risk of getting cancer.

New Billboard Warning of Genetically Modified Mosquitoes
Community opposition to release of GM mosquitoes

Key Largo, FL -- Today a large billboard warns residents and visitors "Genetically Modified Mosquitoes to be released in the Keys." The South-bound traffic facing sign, located at mile marker 94, reflects the growing opposition to the pending decision about the release of millions of Genetically Modified Mosquitoes (GMMs) in Monroe County, Florida. The Florida Keys Mosquito Control District is expected to vote on the release tomorrow afternoon, July 21, 2020, at its public meeting. Public comments will be heard at 5pm EST. If approved, it would give a green light for Monroe County (The Florida Keys) to be the first location GMMs will be released in the U.S.

In a public webinar, presented by independent scientists critical of the potential release, presenters highlighted the lack of regulations, standards, and the lack of transparency. In addition, public health risks have never been considered, such as antibiotic resistance and the inadequacy of testing done to see how the modified mosquitoes will impact not only our local and regional ecosystems, but human health as well.

"Do we really want to be the home of the genetically modified mosquito experiment? At a time when we are already battling one public health pandemic, we should not be experimenting on the environment or the public's health, and must stop any experimenting that could cause another devastating impact on our local economy. We need solutions that are supported by sound science, transparency, and which are going to be sustainable for both our fragile and unique ecosystems, our economy, and least risky for people. The community does not consent to being lab rats in this experiment," said Barry Wray, the Executive Director for the Florida Keys Environmental Coalition. The group has opposed the GMM technology and served as the tip of the spear for a global coalition of science-based groups and individuals opposed to the release of this technology in the Keys and throughout the U.S.

The EPA first rejected the release of these experimental mosquitoes, and then replaced all knowledgeable personnel and approved GM mosquitoes with new personnel for environmental release in Monroe County, Florida and Harris County, Texas on May 1, 2020. In its review, the new EPA review team failed to evaluate key issues surrounding the releases, including safety to human health, potential for the experimental mosquitoes to move out of testing areas, and the unintended release of biting female mosquitoes.

Although documents submitted by British company Oxitec, owned by venture capital firm Third Security, LLC, claim that they will not release female mosquitoes, a recent study from the Powell Lab at Yale University found that the GM female mosquitoes were not sterile as Oxitec claimed, and that the offspring of the company's genetically modified mosquitoes survived into adulthood. The study also raised major concerns that GM mosquitoes could create hybrid wild mosquitoes, which may worsen the spread of disease and be more resistant to insecticides than the original wild mosquitoes. In the wake of Powell's discoveries, Oxitec has publicly contradicted their previous claims, admitting females were released and hybrid species are expected. Oxitec must return to the EPA for a review of these new admissions.

Oxitec still has not released the full data about the proposed new GM mosquitoes. This includes data about the sites proposed for the release in either Florida or Texas and the environmental assessment (EA) or environmental impact statement (EIS).

Recent trials in the Cayman resulted in the rejection of the Oxitec technology and 128 pages of emails released from Chief Scientist, Dr. Allan Wheeler, for the Cayman Mosquito Research and Control Unit (MRCU), who oversaw the testing. The emails exposed the numerous misrepresentation and scientific performance issues experienced during the trial. Oxitec has never addressed the conflict or disparity of their performance claims, versus the actual data collected.

The Florida Keys Mosquito Control District is expected to vote on the rejection or approval of Oxitec's proposed genetically modified mosquito field trial on Tuesday, July 21, at 5pm EST. The public may offer public comments during the meeting via the agency's website.

It's time to get active again and support the planet.

We keep wondering when this madness will STOP!

Stop GMO Mosquitoes URGENT ACTION ALERT: https://www.tinyurl.com/NoGMOmosquitoes

Email officials to let them know that you do not consent to the release of GMO mosquitoes and that you oppose Oxitec's experimentation. Even if you have already taken action before, please take action again. We have added the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District (FKMCD) board of commissioners, Governor Ron DeSantis, and Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried to the send. Take action here: https://www.tinyurl.com/NoGMOmosquitoes

What happens when you get bitten by a GMO mosquito during a pandemic? We don't know. There have been no studies done on the potential impact on human health. There have been no environmental impact studies. And that's a big problem. We shouldn't introduce a potential health risk that we are not equipped to handle. Florida residents and the American public have been kept in the dark as to what's going on. This is unacceptable.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved Oxitec's application to experiment with their genetically engineered mosquitoes in Florida and Texas last month. Unfortunately, last week Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried also approved Oxitec's experiment. There is only one more approval that Oxitec needs. And that is the approval of the FKMCD board of commissioners.

Experiments will begin in Florida at any time if allowed by the FKMCD, unless you take action today and tomorrow. Tell the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District: Stop GMO Mosquito Experimentation in Florida! https://www.tinyurl.com/NoGMOmosquitoes
