Nancy Witherell ART

Nancy Witherell ART We are an art-consulting practice creating healing environments, interiors & public art.

Nancy Witherell Art (NWA) positively benefits patients, families, doctors, and staff by curating locally-sourced artistic elements for healthcare facilities. NWA’s art consulting practice has grown by carefully understanding user needs, from hospital administrators and chief executives who hope to improve medical outcomes leading to healthier patients and shorter stays, to chief medical officers who desire to create a nurturing environment for doctors, nurses, staff and family members, to patients and families who seek quality care, comfort, safety, and healing. NWA’s healthcare art-consulting practice is focused primarily on healing and living environments: Hospitals, Medical offices, Outpatient care facilities, Diagnostic centers, Pain management practices, Senior centers/Eldercare facilities, Assisted living, facilities, Hospice, Extended stay family homes

We are fortunate to get to install beautiful art by talented artists.

Every now and again something catches our fancy and I have to post it. This gorgeous piece by sculptor Kristine Mays was a philanthropic gift to the CPMC Van Ness Campus in San Francisco. It is installed in the garden outside of labour and delivery with a view of the sculpture from the post partum rooms.

We are so excited! Nancy's brother is putting Al Capone's collection up for auction - he revealed the whole catalog a few days ago! "The collection, which includes Capone’s “favorite” gun (a C**t .45 pistol starting at $50,000), a Patek Philippe pocket watch monogrammed with 90 diamonds, and personal letters is estimated to sell for $700,000, by luxury asset auctioneer Witherell’s, based in Sacramento, which revealed the catalog today. Timothy Gordon, of PBS’s “Antiques Roadshow,” appraised the items."
Check it out here:

Bidding on some items begins at only $100 and the auction of 174 items offers a range of possessions belonging to the Chicago gangster.

This quarantine can't stop ART! Construction on medical facilities is considered essential, and as we all know - so is art. This mural install at Kaiser Santa Rosa happened a couple of days ago and it went up beautifully. A huge shout out and thank you to Martha Wade and her amazing team! It is only fitting that a facility in Sonoma County have redwood trees. This mural is going to let everyone feel a little of the awe, wonder, and peace that comes when in the presence of these giant trees. Pretty amazing work - and aren't we lucky we get to share this with our community?!?

Every now and then we like to highlight an artist that inspires us. This time it is Angelina Duckett of Angelina Duckett Mosaics. Angelina worked alongside our principal, Nancy Witherell, over the course of five months to create this memorial mosaic for Nancy’s son Wiley. The mosaic was installed this weekend at the Children’s Memorial in Spring Lake Park, Santa Rosa. We honor you for your talent, and thank you Angelina.

If you ever wondered about the 'purpose' of art, now is the time to see how clearly art sustains us in times of surreal stress. And here's something for art enthusiasts, or bored at-home-quarantined-creative people, to do...entertaining themselves and the rest of the world at the same time. Go for it!

Even though most of us are stuck at home and can't go out and enjoy art in museums, that doesn't mean that life is boring or uncultured. The Getty Museum in Los Angeles challenged art fans to post photos of themselves recreating their favorite works of art from the safety of their homes. People resp...

Months of work...so many things got in the way...but nothing stopped the placement of this beautiful mural. A HUGE shout-out to Martha Wade and the whole team at NWA. If ever brightness and beauty were needed, now is the time! Congratulations!

A passing driver shouted up to our team on the scaffolding, "It's beautiful, we are all going to be OK!"

Unbelievably, the team finished getting the panels up yesterday.

These two stories are being played out across the street from each:

First, Memorial Hospital is steeling itself to be awash with patients arriving from the community requiring care in the face of an unknown future with the novel Coronavirus - preparing a fever clinic and an “ER tent”. Second, Martha Wade and her team of four has been installing her 4 story, 28’ x 52’ mural of Poppies and Lupine, 20 months in creation, across the street on the new six-story parking structure built to support Memorial Hospital and the new Medical Office Building they are building next to it. The mural is a series of 22 panels that took her 10 months to paint in her studio, her design was chosen from among 5 other artists. It will take a week for Martha to hand touch up the seams from this point baring a county wide shut down. Next, the safety netting will come down, allowing her to see the big picture and touch up any final transitions that catch her eye.

Dr. Amy Shaw works in the Cancer Center in the Medical Office Building across the street from the mural. She said that she and her team have been coming out to look up at the mural on their breaks and follow the progress. At the end of her workday yesterday she reported, “ The poppies and lupine are spectacular. Beautiful site as I walk out of my office after a long and stressful day.”

At Nancy Witherell Art, we appreciate Memorial’s commitment to exercising Santa Rosa's 1% for Public Art initiative with this large, exterior project when they built their new Medical Office Building and accompanying parking structure and for reaching out to us to execute it. We can all use beauty in uncertainty.

Once again, the science supports the arts. "Chelsea and Westminster Hospital has found that the mental health and experiences of those receiving intrusive examinations, surgery, chemotherapy and emergency care are improved when visual art is installed." This kind of report makes all of us here at NWA feel good, knowing we are doing our part to help people heal.

Shea House! This lovely home-away-from-home that serves families with hospitalized babies in the Sutter Santa Rosa NICU had to be rebuilt after the fires two years ago. Good things take time. And this is a Good Thing. We are proud of our work here and grateful we had the opportunity to serve our community in such a meaningful way.
