Who is your hero? I’ll tell you about mine.
When I was pregnant with my son, I connected with Jeannine Parvati Baker. We talked for a while on the phone and she said some really empowering things to me that helped me through a hard time while prepping for birth. She was friendly, funny, warm, and above all she made time for me.
Just after, she announced online that she was very sick. A week or two before she passed, I talked to her again on the phone. This time she was hard to hear and understand, but she reached out and again made time for me. I gave birth a few months after she passed and thought of her empowering words the whole time. I attended her memorial with baby in arms, hoping to know her just a tiny bit more. Sometimes when we drive up north to the hot springs near her memorial site, we stop to say hello.
Sometimes we just need someone who believes in us, reaches out to us, and offers us the kind of support that we need in that moment.
Thank you, Jeannine. Because of your kindness, I gave birth like a badass and it empowers me still today.
