If you’re miserable because you spend most of your days sitting in traffic to get to a JOB you hate, spend most of your nights and weekends drunk to escape your miserable existence and live for the one or two weeks out of the year when you get to drink all day because you’re on vacation, see your doctor. They have a pill for that.
What they won’t tell you is that the drugs will not just numb the feelings of sadness, disappointment and anger from living an unfulfilled life but will also numb the pleasurable emotions like love, joy, inspiration, awe, essentially turning you into an emotional zombie. They also won’t tell you that manipulating your brain chemistry with these drugs increases your risk of su***de. Not a good trade off.
A magic bullet doesn’t exist. Believe me, I know. I spent my twenties medicated and trusting in the medical establishment. Until I realized I wasn’t going to make it if I continued on that path. The way out of the medical matrix isn’t always easy, but it’s so worth it. Addressing unresolved trauma and chronic stress is the most critical factor, along with assessing your lifestyle, relationships, diet, movement, toxic burden and nutrient status.
My favorite way to assess toxic metals and mineral status is hair testing. It’s a simple test that gives a lot of data about what’s going on at the cellular level. What’s interesting is that unresolved trauma and chronic stress are major factors in our toxic burden and nutrient status because they impact our ability to detox and retain minerals. High levels of toxic metals and low levels of minerals, or even an imbalance of minerals are key drivers of negative mental states like anxiety and depression. When these are out of balance, it’s pretty hard to take an honest look at your life and take the steps needed to dig yourself out of a rut. But when you begin to address these things, the brain starts to work better and it becomes easier to put one foot in front of the other to build the kind of life you want.
