It is about time that the true severity and widespread impact of Lyme disease is being recognized. For more than two decades, I have listened to my patients share stories of profound suffering, repeated dismissal, and being told that what they were experiencing was “all in their heads.” The harm caused by this kind of medical gaslighting cannot be overstated.

Lyme disease has shaped much of my work and my life. As a physician, and as someone who has personally overcome this illness, it was deeply meaningful to me to hear patients finally acknowledged at yesterday’s HHS roundtable. I pray this moment represents a real step in the right direction, and that we continue to move forward not only in recognizing the effects of chronic Lyme disease, but also in remaining open to a broader range of therapeutic approaches that many patients, including myself, have found helpful in their recovery.
