It’s our habits that need to change more than anything when working towards health goals.

So often it’s how we ‘weekend’, celebrate special occasions, how we vacation, how we live our daily lives that has an immense impact on our health. Learning to slowly change our habits is life (and health) changing

Despite struggling with our diets we believe most people actually know how to improve their diet, or what’s needed for a generally good and healthy diet.

Sadly we feel our industry often doesn’t help people like it claims to, too many fad diets, too make companies pushing some shakes or pills to get there the ‘easy way’. There’s so much money in the industry that companies fall over themselves pushing something that doesn’t help the consumer just to make a buck. The noise at times is deafening, it must be so confusing for sure.

If we asked you what are the key ingredients to a healthy lifestyle we’re sure you would all answer roughly the same:

➡️ Get adequate sleep (not always easy..)
➡️ Adequate hydration 💦
➡️ Eat a balanced and somewhat varied diet.
➡️ Keep sugar low to moderate.
➡️ Eat a moderate amount of daily protein (high really isn’t needed…)
➡️ Eat a moderate to high amount of daily fiber (so many people don’t eat enough I find)
➡️ Be somewhat physically active (all of us here are already that ⭐️)
➡️ Practice self-care (key for us all)

The one thing we can all do to improve our diet & health in 2023 is get back to basics.

The basics, “The Foundations” of our diet & health are where the bang for your buck is. Majoring in the minors has little value for us all.

Things to not worry about:

✖️What your macro % is
✖️What your TDEE is
✖️Tracking everything you eat
✖️Hitting your daily macro targets
✖️Eating within a certain time window
✖️Taking supplements
✖️Pre/post workout fuel
This list is non-exhaustive…

Let’s get back to basics.

PLT Nutrition Coaching has always been about coachclient get togethers.

Our PLT Nutrition Community cover picture is some 3 years old now and its a collage of many pictures of our awesome clients. We always have been more than an online company, we have always been 'in-person' where possible.

This week Paul & Patti had the pleasure of breakfast with a PLT OG, Caryn💛

It never ceases how connected and familiar we become with someone we have never met, just from being close to them in our regular interactions.

This is how coaching should be. Not everyone is ‘Neighbor A’ but we certainly wish them to be and always meet clients where they need us

Achieving our body composition requires balancing our energy intake (calories) with our energy output (our metabolism)

The largest part of our metabolism is our BMR - approx 70% (Basal Metabolic Rate - the energy our body needs to function)

Your BMR is defined by you, your physical size (height and weight (and so size of organs)

And whilst this can increase/decrease with body size changes (gaining/losing weight) the changes are fairly negligible all things considered.

A persons BMR is typically around 9x their bodyweight (women) and 10x for a man (ballpark figures)

The other parts to your metabolism in size order are:
NEAT - the energy used through general movement (15%)
TEF - the energy required by your body to process food (10%)
EAT - exercise (only 5%)

As you can see, exercise is almost inconsequential for those with fat loss goals.

The game is won/lost with NEAT, and helped by TEF.
More standing than sitting, more walking than using a car etc will help keep your NEAT higher.
Eating more whole foods, more lean protein, more fibrous foods will help increase your TEF.

Neither NEAT or TEF tangible as such, they’re a hidden part to our metabolism. The part we typically see is EAT/exercise.

We exercise and believe we are being active but if we spend our days sitting not standing, and eating more processed foods, then we are missing the biggest components of our metabolism that we can somewhat control.

Walking truly is a ninja when it comes to fat loss.
As are lean proteins and fiber. Lean protein (food not drinks) has the highest TEF of all and will satiate you longer.
Add in fiber & some healthy fats to slow digestion and aid satiation and you have a 1-2 punch!

Hit all 3 and you’re well on your way to your goals.
This is why your foundational weeks at PLT Nutrition Coaching are super important and until you master the basics your journey will be harder and longer.

Are you team ‘3 squares’ or team ‘snacks rule’??

Perhaps you aren’t much of a snacker; you prefer to only eat your main meals and that’s what works for you. If that’s the case that’s totally cool!

If you do like to snack however, learning how to choose healthful snacks and fit them into your day has been shown to be of great benefit no matter what your health goals are

Here are some great tips on getting the most out of your snacks with ‘Mindful Munching’
