Rare Celestial Phenomenon Witnessed Over Nigeria

On the night of January 3, 2026, skywatchers across Nigeria were treated to a rare atmospheric and celestial display. The event featured a Supermoon—a full moon that appears larger and brighter than average due to its closest approach to Earth in its elliptical orbit.

Beyond the lunar brilliance, a unique meteorological phenomenon occurred. Rapidly forming cumulus clouds—driven by Nigeria's tropical moisture—aligned with the rising moon to create a striking instance of pareidolia. The wispy, high-altitude cloud formations naturally mirrored the appearance of outstretched "angel wings," framing the moon in a symmetrical display.

This "celestial combo" was further enhanced by the clear night air typical of the early year, providing high visibility for both the lunar details and the surrounding star field. Such sightings occur when specific wind speeds and humidity levels sculpt the clouds at the exact moment of the moon's peak illumination.

A RAINBOW POURING INTO THE OCEAN

It maybe happened off the Florida Atlantic Coast, late afternoon, when a storm cell was still dropping rain offshore and the Sun broke through behind the camera.

The big arc is a rainbow — sunlight enters raindrops, reflects inside, and comes back out split into colors. The “vertical color curtains” below it are the same idea, but stretched by a tight rain shaft and sea mist: the light is interacting with a thick sheet of falling rain, so the spectrum looks like it’s streaming downward instead of forming one clean line.

The warm glow on top of the clouds is the last sunlight catching the highest edges, while the darker blue around it is the heavier rain and shadow underneath.
