✨ From tiny hand squeezes to heartfelt smiles, Santa shared precious moments and photos with our babies and their families, bringing comfort, cheer and a little holiday magic to the hospital halls.

❤️🎁 SMH’s Pregnancy Care Team and First 1000 Days Suncoast joined the MITER Foundation to host a heartwarming holiday celebration for many of the families we’ve had the privilege of supporting this year!

From children doing crafts and decorating cookies, to photos with Santa, the day was filled with joy and meaningful moments for everyone. 🎅

A special thank you to the MITER Foundation for sponsoring the event and generously volunteering time; Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation for championing community partnerships; and First 1,000 Days Suncoast for supporting families throughout pregnancy and their child’s first 1,000 days of life — helping every child start strong.

Families who deliver at SMH are given a brain development bag designed to support their child's cognitive growth from the very start?

Thanks to the First 1000 Days Suncoast initiative and it's partnership with Sarasota County Government & Friends of the Venice Public Library, we are able to include books inside of the brain development bags. Not only does reading to your baby from the very beginning create a strong bond between parent and child, but it also lays the foundation for a lifetime of learning!

🌼🏆 Congrats to Leah Brown, BSN, RN, RNC-MCC, CBC, for earning the by going above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of our patients and their families!

Leah was recognized by a new mom who described her as a constant source of calm, compassion and advocacy during two deeply meaningful chapters of her motherhood journey. After the birth of her first daughter in 2022 — who was born with a cleft palate — Leah’s steady reassurance and hands-on support helped her navigate a challenging time. Two years later, they reunited as Leah cared for her second baby as the lactation nurse; her expertise and genuine care once again made all the difference.

✨💙 In 1992, perinatologist Washington Hill, MD, joined SMH and developed the hospital’s Maternal-Fetal Medicine department — a vital program that continues to support high-risk mothers and babies throughout the region today.

Just a year later, Dr. Hill delivered one of the smallest babies in the nation to survive preterm birth. Caci Renee Burke weighed just 12.9 ounces — about the size of three sticks of butter — when she was born at SMH in 1993. After four months in the NICU, cared for by neonatologists and specially trained NICU nurses, Caci not only survived but thrived!

🙌 For more than three decades, Dr. Hill’s leadership and advocacy have advanced maternal-fetal care, and as an enduring community partner, we salute his continuing efforts to promote expert, compassionate care for all.

👶✨ Choosing a pediatrician before your baby is born might seem early — but it's one of the smartest steps you can take to prepare for your child’s health.

💬 “It’s difficult to overstate the importance of finding a pediatrician that you really trust and can really feel comfortable with,” says FPG Pediatrician Ronald D. Laracuente, MD. He recommends scheduling in-person meetings at the pediatrician’s office, to get a sense of both the people and the place. “This is your time to ask all of your questions,” he says. “You want a pediatrician who will help you meet your parenting goals.”

This special initiative gives families access to books and literacy resources — supporting comfort, bonding and early language development while their babies receive NICU care.

Launched in honor of the National “Babies with Books Read-A-Thon” happening this week, the library encourages parents and caregivers to read aloud to their little ones — and every family is offered books to take home, so the love of reading can grow beyond hospital walls!💕
