Skin-to-skin contact after birth is essential for both mother and baby. It aids in regulating the baby's breathing and boosts the mother's hormone production, which can lower the risk of excessive blood loss. This contact remains important in the days and weeks afterward. Maximizing skin-to-skin time within the first 48 hours can encourage quicker milk production and improve breastfeeding success. However, immediate skin-to-skin may not be feasible if the baby requires assistance with breathing.

One of the most common concerns among parents is how emergencies are managed at the birth center. Since every birth is different, it's important for you to recognize when something is not normal in your pregnancy progress. We always inform you if there are any concerns and explain how to get things back on track.

We have a great relationship with our local hospital, which has an excellent labor and delivery unit and NICU. Throughout the process, we keep you informed whether everything is normal or if you need extra care outside of the birth center.

A Non-Stress Test (NST) is a common prenatal screening used to assess your baby's health, typically conducted after 28 weeks of pregnancy. It monitors the baby's heart rate in response to their movements over 20 to 40 minutes. A normal result indicates the baby's heart rate accelerates properly, confirming that the baby is getting sufficient oxygen.

High-risk can mean different things depending on the context, as various factors can contribute to someone being classified as high-risk. For instance, an individual might be considered high-risk for complications during labor, preterm labor, or genetic issues. To ensure appropriate care, healthcare providers assess each person's unique risk factors to determine whether a birth at a birth center or a hospital is more suitable.

Latching your baby can be easy for some or challenging for others. If the baby isn’t in the correct position or can't open their mouth wide, achieving a deep latch becomes more difficult. Our goal is a good, deep latch.

A deep latch shouldn't cause pain. It should help the baby access more milk. If the baby latches too close to the ni**le's tip, it can cause a pinched ni**le, reduce milk intake, and cause discomfort for the mother.

A fetoscope is a device that enables us to listen to the baby's heartbeat through the mother's abdomen, amniotic fluid, and the baby’s shoulders.

Unlike a Doppler, which generates synthetic ultrasound waves, a fetoscope captures the natural sound of the baby's heartbeat.
