Most gravestones only contain an epitaph about the departed; however for chefs, bakers or anyone passionate about a favorite dish, they may choose to include their favorite recipe instead.

If you look on the back or top of a headstone, you may just find a loved one’s famous recipe that you can make at home to honor their memory.

One year after George and Jack Toale purchased our funeral home, J.G. Whitfield, owner and developer of Whitfield Estates, planned to construct a three-story hotel called the Bay Haven Inn with 70 rooms and space on the first floor for eleven stores.

Whitfield purchased the land from Walter V. Coleman, a real estate developer, under the agreement that Coleman would take the land back if Whitfield was unable to finish building the hotel. In August of that year, the hotel remained unfinished and was sold back to Coleman for just $1. Coleman completed the project and opened it as the Bay Haven Hotel. You can still see the building today at the Ringling College of Art and Design.

In 1948, the same year George and Jack Toale purchased our funeral home, fifth graders in Sarasota became part of the local Snake Club. It was founded by the father of Marie Proctor, a young girl who was bitten by a snake while waiting for the school bus. Sadly, she had to have her leg amputated as a result of what was believed to a rattlesnake bite.

To prevent something like this from happening to anyone else, her father created the Sarasota Snake Club to teach children which snakes were poisonous and how to identify the nonpoisonous reptiles that are natural helpers in our environment.

In honor of the approaching Veterans Day, we’re shedding light on our local military cemetery, Sarasota National Cemetery. It’s a place where veterans, their spouses and other eligible family members can be laid to rest.
